FERRIDAY — Zeta Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., mentored boys in sixth grade at Ferriday Junior High School during the 2008-09 school year.

Members address one area of its five-pronged programs. This program has included meetings with the boys, providing school supplies, checking on grades each grading period, counseling with them, and being the mediator between students and teachers when problems arise.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha responds to the contemporary needs of the black community with comprehensive non-traditional programs,” said Ora Frazier, chapter president. “The vision embraces a five-pronged program designed to excite, galvanize and ignite the passions of more than 180,000 members worldwide. The goal is to transfer this enthusiasm into a collective resolve to parlay members’ talents, energy and creativity to realize Alpha Kappa Alpha’s enormous potential for empowerment, security and progress.”

The culminating activity for this school year took place recently in the school’s cafeteria. Frazier, vice president Evelyn Smith and members Dorothy Marsalis and Irma Sims passed out packets for use during summer vacation, encouraged them to check out books from the public library to read, presented certificates to each student, provided treats for students to take home and gave monetary rewards to three students with the highest GPA.

The final meeting for the school year ended with an ice cream party for the students and members.

“A powerful remedy lies in devising strategies for assisting young males in overcoming the formidable challenges to their educational development and well-being” Frazier said.
