Ferriday water tank gets low bid
Published 12:07am Wednesday, September 9, 2009FERRIDAY — An unexpectedly low bid for the Town of Ferriday’s yet-to-be built water tank will give the town some “much needed breathing room,” Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin said.
While the town did not officially select a bid, the lowest bid of approximately $476,000 from Camo Construction, in Vidalia, brought a smile to McGlothin’s face.
“We heard from most people the job was going to cost about $900,000,” McGlothin said. “So this is great for us.”
The new tank will play an integral part in the rebuilding of the town’s failing water treatment plant.
And since the bid for the work came in so much lower than expected, the town will be able to allocate funding that would have gone to the tank, to other aspects of the project.
The Ferriday Board of Aldermen passed a motion Tuesday night that will now permit the town’s attorney and engineer to examine all the bids.
A vote on accepting one of the bids could come in the next week, McGlothin said.
In other news, the aldermen voted to give themselves a raise for each special meeting they attend.
Tuesday’s 3-2 vote will now put $100 in the pocket of the aldermen each time they attend a specially-called meeting.
Alderwomen Summer Lane and Gloria Lloyd voted against the motion.
Aldermen Jerome Harris, who voted for the motion, said he did so because he felt the aldermen should receive additional compensation for specially-called meetings.
McGlothin, after the meeting, said he felt the new motion could prove costly for the city.
“That can come out to several hundred (dollars) a month,” McGlothin said. “We don’t need that.”
