Bluff gazebo shows weekend battle scars

Published 12:03am Tuesday, August 23, 2011

NATCHEZ — One of the Broadway Street gazebo’s steps partied hard Saturday night.

Or at least it might have, Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.

The top step is a bit charred, and something like a wayward cigarette butt could have caused the flames, Mullins said, but there were no witnesses and no arson charges have been filed.

Fire crews responded at approximately 5:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a report.

A short strand of caution tape and two portable fences blocked off the entrance to the gazebo to keep people off of its steps Monday afternoon, which Mullins said is just a precautionary measure until it’s determined that everything is safe.

Dear Lord, people just tear up everything. See if the officers would patrol as they should this may not be such a mystery… and yet they want more money for officers?  No, they need to make those who are already on staff do their job and insure that they do it properly.

    Kind lady, you’re absolutely right.

Well, if they did patrols, they would have to give up radar traps – which do you prefer?  LOL

Uh, let me see now, i’m still thinking, let’s see, I pick patrols.  It will probably be tough to give up Homochitto.  Everytime I get behind someone, they’re never going faster than 131/2 miles an hour.  It’s hilarious to see ‘em parked there trying to catch someone.

I very much agree, how much crime do the officers witness or stop while sitting radar trap on north/south end of town – they need to be IN the town, not almost outside it!

I also hate to be the burden of bad news to the NPD BUT, a cigarette will not burn the steps to the point no one can walk on them. I realize that cigarettes are lit with a live fire but the most they will do is burn the paint and or leave a burn mark, not burn them beyond recognition or render them unsafe to walk on. So they can eliminate  the cigarette scenario and think more arson, intentionally set, you know maybe gasoline or some other flammable product to help induce fire. NOW that would be more in line with rendering the gazebo unsafe to enter…. and just so everyone knows… NO I do not smoke, LOL Just thought I would throw that in there since it has been in the news a lot lately.

I do not know where they patrol but if this is happening at the gazebo then they are definitely not patrolling that area and sitting in parking lots talking is not patrolling  it is visiting.

First it needs to be repaired, then we need more officers and patrols, and more folks to come forward and tell who did things like this. This is a small town everybody knows who did what an when.More than likely a kid or a drunk  they hang in the same area.

Hopefully after flicking his butt on the steps the drunk landed on his but in the poision ivy “schrubbery” surrounding the gazebo
