Spears’ status uncertain

LORMAN — Alcorn State University has yet to reach a final decision on the job status of head football coach Melvin Spears.

Spears was placed on administrative leave Dec. 12, and Clara Stamps, a spokesperson for ASU, said the situation is under review by the human resources department.

“Coach Spears is a personnel matter, and it is being handled by HR,” Stamps said. “I have not spoken to HR since I returned (from the holiday break).”

Stamps said human resources director Carla Williams was out of the office Monday afternoon, and she expects to meet with her this morning.

Alcorn State went 2-8 this past season, Spears’ first as head coach. He came under fire last month after an alleged verbal altercation between himself and the Rev. Chris Perkins Sr., father of ASU wide receiver Chris Perkins Jr.

Spears is alleged to have shouted multiple obscenities and threatened to harm Perkins Sr. following an appeal hearing regarding Perkins Jr.’s status as a scholarship athlete back in late August. Spears has denied the allegations.

Uncertain??? Huge understatement…but an update nonetheless on a pitiful story of inept mediocre football.

I guess this cat is just sitting there in limbo.  Looks like no one wants to deal with it.

If blacks did not play football at trinty, accs, ms. state, ole miss , lsu & some of these other universities, they would be less than mediocre.

Your point is invalid. If you are truly saying that “If blacks did not play football at trinty, accs, ms. state, ole miss , lsu & some of these other universities, they would be less than mediocre”…then wouldn’t that same arguement not say that since Alcorn State University and SWAC football teams in general are mostly 100% black…that these all black SWAC teams should be National Champions year end and year out?

It is not the black athlete that reigns supreme…contrary to your feliefs…it is the T-E-A-M
