Cathedral’s Daniel Huffines signs with Holmes

NATCHEZ — A visit to Holmes Community College two weeks ago sealed the deal for Cathedral High School senior Daniel Huffines.

Huffines, a wide receiver, signed with the Bulldogs on National Signing Day Wednesday, and he said he simply felt like Holmes was the right place for him.

“I liked what they had to offer, and I just felt like it was the right fit,” Huffines said.

“The coaching staff is really concerned with making you more of a man and focusing on all of your studies, all the while making you a better football player and bringing out the talent in you.”

This past season, Huffines had 71 catches for the Green Wave, tallying 1,232 yards and 16 touchdowns. He said the Bulldogs will play him at the slot receiver position.

“I’m really comfortable (at that position),” Huffines said. “Their offense is kind of like what we run here at Cathedral. It’s not going to be too much of a change.”

Huffines said he first knew he wanted to play college football the second he stepped onto the playing field as a freshman, and now that he’s getting the chance, it’s a dream come true.

“Now that it’s set, it’s a big relief,” Huffines said. “I’m excited to get going and to start the next chapter of my life. I just like doing on the field doing what I love, especially being there with my best friends.”

With his college decision final, Huffines said he can relax for the next few months.

“It’s comforting knowing you have a place to go,” Huffines said. “I can sit back and enjoy the rest of my senior year with all the worries over, because I’ve finally got a home.”

Huffines had a 4.11 grade-point average and scored a 25 on the ACT. He is the son of Lisa and Danny Huffines.
