NATCHEZ — The Adams County search for a missing Mangham, La., man was called off Tuesday.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Adams County Search and Rescue searched more than 600 acres of woods and six miles of creek bank near Kingston Road in an effort to locate Shaun Thornhill, 41.

The search began Jan. 26, but was briefly called off on the morning of Jan. 27 to allow the creeks in the area to drop. Air Evac assisted with the search by doing helicopter fly-overs Friday morning. The rescue effort resumed Tuesday morning but was called off at noon.

“When you’re dealing with an incident like this you have mixed emotions,” Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said. “You want to be able to give a person’s family answers and closure as soon as possible, but at the same time what you don’t find gives you hope that they’ll be found somewhere safe and well.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

The ACSO received a report of an abandoned vehicle on Kingston Road Jan. 25, and after investigation the vehicle was identified as Thornhills. His family was notified that the truck had been found, and Thornhill’s sister Christel Wyant said the family filed a missing person report with the Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office. Thornhill was last seen in St. Francisville on Jan. 22. Family members said he was looking for work on a tugboat.

The vehicle was locked and contained Thornhill’s clothes, wallet and a television. Some ID cards had been removed from the wallet, but other cards — for example, Thornhill’s insurance card — were left behind, Wyant said.

Thornhill is 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has a large tattoo of the sun with the number 798 inside it on his left arm.

Anyone with information about Thornhill’s whereabouts should contact the ACSO at 601-442-2752.
