Softball roundup: Franklin Co. takes double header

MEADVILLE — Franklin County was able to remain undefeated in region play Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs swept a varsity doubleheader from Collins to remain unbeaten in MHSAA Region 7-3A.

Lay Lay Griffin pitched five innings of one-hit ball despite having trouble at times with the strike zone, and Nicole White went 3-for-3 with a triple as Franklin County defeated Collins 10-1 in the opner.

Griffin struck out six batters, but she also walked five batters and hit two batters.

Griffin got plenty of run support as Franklin County led 5-0 after three innings, and then ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Karlee Mullins belted two doubles and went 2-for-4 at the plate while KeKe Collins was 3-for-3 with a double.

The second game only took three innings as the Lady Bulldogs took care of the Lady Tigers 16-1. Griffin got the start and went two innings. She allowed one run on no hits, struck out five and walked four. A couple of errors led to Collins’ lone run in the top of the second inning.

Seventh-grader Harley McKay pitched the third inning and allowed one hit. Franklin County led Collins 8-1 before putting up eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to end the game. That half-inning was highlighted by a two-run home run from Kiarra Sykes and a three-run shot from Jamecia Starks.

White hit two triples and went 2-for-3 while Collins was 3-for-3 with a double.

Franklin County (7-7-1, 4-0) next plays at the Seminary Tournament on Saturday at 12:30 and 4 p.m.

Jena 8, Vidalia 4

JENA, La. — Jena scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as they defeated Vidalia Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.

After being roughed up in the first inning, Vidalia’s Laura Perilloux settled down. She went four innings and allowed eight runs (four earned) on 13 hits. Taylor Rodgers came in and pitched two innings of no-hit ball with three strikeouts and two walks.

Katlyn Thorton and Savanah McCarver each had a double for the Lady Vikings.

Vidalia (15-10, 2-5) plays at Cathedral at 5 p.m. today with the junior varsity game to be followed by the varsity game.

Monterey 5, Rapides 0

LECOMPTE, La. — Ellen Bairnsfather allowed just four hits and struck out five in a complete-game outing as the Monterey Lady Wolves defeated Rapides Thursday afternoon in LHSAA District 4-B action.

Monterey scored all of its runs in the first three innings – one run in both the top of the first and the top of the second and three runs in the top of the third. All of the Lady Wolves’ six hits were singles. No player from either team had more than one hit.

Monterey (11-8, 5-1) will face Runnels at 6 p.m. today in the Caldwell Parish tournament.
