NATCHEZ — In the late winter, the view of the sunset from the Natchez bluffs is almost perfect. The sun, setting in the south, appears to be falling into the river.

It’s a great scene in which to sit back and drink Gin Rickeys with friends, and every Thursday BriarVue lets the public have that chance — no matter what their drink of choice is.

For the last three weeks, BriarVue Bed and Breakfast has hosted Cocktails at Sunset, a tradition on the site that had died out in recent years. The new owner of The Briars and BriarVue, Leon Atkins, said the weekly cocktail bar was resurrected after several locals approached him about it.

“Cocktails at sunset had been an ongoing thing at The Briars prior to our owning it, and we heard from several people around town they wanted to see that come back,” Atkins said.

“It has been very relaxing, a very enjoyable evening.”

One significant change has been made to the tradition, however. Whereas Cocktails at Sunset was previously hosted at The Briars — which now serves as the Atkins family home — it has been moved to the other building on the property, BriarVue.

That actually moves the cocktails closer to the river and the view from the bluffs.
