Natchez needs to stop playing games

Published 12:02am Wednesday, May 2, 2012

As you can tell by my address, I do not live in the City of Natchez.

I go to church in Natchez, spend money in Natchez and do 90 percent of my business in Natchez, so what happens does affect me in some degree.

Figuratively speaking, I do not have a dog in this fight, just an outside observation.

There has been a lot of talk about racism among the board members of the City of Natchez. White men nominate a white person for chief of police, and this is called racism.

Three black people get up and walk out of a meeting, this is not racism?

When I was a child, and we were playing a game — and it appears the board of aldermen are playing a game — if the person who owned the ball did not get their way, instead of trying to reach a solution, they would take the ball and go home.

Apparently, the three aldermen who walked out own the ball.

In my opinion, the City of Natchez needs to elect officials who will not take the ball and go home, but work together to find a solution.

Drop the race card, settle down and plan for the future of Natchez.

You must be in good company, the two runoff candidates for Mayor do not live in the city either.  I would thus assume someone who actually lives in Alabama and owns property in the city could run for Mayor?

Mr. Bland it is simple racism and will stay racism no matter how many parades the NACP have for they not only feel they own the ball but also the field as well (just as the rec. complex if ever built)!! Whites are going to have to do their things as that of the 60s’!!!!

West has been living off Jeff Davis blvd. for over (4) years, just ask the neighbor’s next door.

Go by mr atkins office & check it out for yourself, that mr west homestead is correct & while you are checking, check out the other
candidates homestead & come back online & tell us what you have found.

You are correct in that Mr. West owns a house on Sun Court, but very seldom if ever stays there, perhaps his neighbor Supervisor Mike Lazarus could enlighten us on this issue?  Mr. Brown alleged in his debate response that he has the place on S. Commerce and claims homestead exemption there and owns no other property outside the city limits.  This veiled truth does not address that the family home on Bisland was inherited by his wife from her late father and is either in her name or a family trust or similar action.  Verifying homestead exemption on that residence would be interesting to determine whether the husband/wife team actually claim homestead on two separate properties within Adams County?

Okay, olsouthgent- I am nowhere as well-spoken or smart as you ( See? I can be humble!) and I have some time coming up. How would I look into this? Are such things public record, ie homestead exemption? What is the office that the candidates register with? I want to know how they verify a candidate. I have a lot of questions.
And I will say again- I have NO  agenda against anyone running for office. But I am sick of dishonesty in politics, and folks…ya gotta confront it somewhere.

Circuit Clerk should be the signer upper, tax assessor for homestead exemption, down the hall from each other at city hall.  I would think that public record laws should apply to one or both, the offices should be able to confirm or deny.

Further, Larry Gardner is the election commissioner whom should be involved in the qualification process.

I just want to correct you on Mr. Brown’s wife’s inheritance of the Bisland property; her father is still alive

Consider me corrected please.  Does her father live with them at Bisland or is he an absentee homeowner?  Who claims homestead exemption there?

Ask mike & he will tell you the same, this man has been living in this house for over (4) years, i personally
    helped him to move in.
