Margaret Martin should be honored

Published 12:04am Thursday, May 10, 2012

Until recently, I haven’t paid much attention to the old Natchez High School building on Homochitto Street.

For several years, the Natchez Opera Festival has leased the building and a sign “Performing Arts Center” was placed over the main entrance. This building has been known as Margaret Martin Junior High School, and advertisements for the Natchez Festival of Music always refers to performances at the Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center, even though this name appears nowhere on the building.

Since this building is owned by the City of Natchez, I would think a new sign should be placed on the building denoting its proper name in honor and respect to the memory of Margaret Martin.

To have eliminated her name from the building is wrong and should be corrected as soon as possible.

Jim, I know where your coming from but my opinon is as always that the city need to sell this liability (Old High School and Stadium) to get on the tax rolls to develope!! I just thought of a naughty thing and that would be something to put goverment housing there beside all them histerical folks for I bet that would get on channel 3 Jackson huh’??!! 3 On My Side

They need to renovate it into a proper space for the performing arts and THEN they can put her name on it.  Right now it would be meaningless to put her name on a poorly maintained eyesore.
