Mayfield, others unharmed following explosion

Published 10:32am Wednesday, June 20, 2012

NASHVILLE — A gas leak explosion forced Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield and approximately 500 other sheriffs to evacuate their rooms at the Opryland Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in Nashville Tuesday evening.

None of the hotel’s occupants were injured. Mayfield was in Nashville for the National Sheriff’s Convention.

The explosion happened at approximately 8:15 p.m.

According to a news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, investigators with the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement and firefighters investigated the explosion before ruling out suspicious activity. The explosion was determined to be caused by a gas leak.

“We’re all very lucky to be safe and unharmed,” Mayfield said. “I’m thankful that national and local area officials handled this matter swiftly and were able to get us all back in our rooms by early (Wednesday) morning.”

Ahem, how much is this trip costing the taxpayers, similar to other articles in the last 2 days?

I would like to thank the Adams County Sheriff’s Office Public Relations staff for setting our collective minds at ease.  I suspect the Homeland Defense officials are being politically correct by calling it a “gas leak”.  More likely a collective flatulence attack suffered by 500 sheriffs and their traveling companions, due to excessive high living at taxpayer’s expense. Technically that would be a “gas leak”.

So glad that no one was hurt in what could have been a much worse situation. The sheriff is doing a great job in the community and i commend him for attending a conference where he could make connections and exchange ideas with other law enforcement officials that could be beneficial to our area. Also i wonder if the other 499 sheriffs come from such negative communities that feel the need to complain every time they do something to better themselves. I wish that some of our residents would take a little more pride in our town and put a little more trust in our leaders, especially if they have proven time and again that they deserve our respect.
