Pot package leads to arrest

Published 5:05pm Wednesday, June 20, 2012

NATCHEZ — Two Natchez men were arrested Tuesday after drug enforcement authorities intercepted approximately $55,000 worth of marijuana in a package reportedly addressed to their residence.

Benjamin Willis

According to a news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics — with the help of Metro Narcotics and the Ridgeland Police Department — arrested Benjamin Stratton Willis, 30, 509 N. Canal St., on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after he reportedly signed for a package that was supposed to contain four pounds of hydroponic marijuana.

Joseph Willis

Local police in Jackson had previously intercepted the package, which was addressed to Willis, and the marijuana had been turned over to MBN.

After Willis signed for the package, MBN obtained a search warrant for his residence. In the bedroom of Joseph Harmen Willis, 34, the agents reportedly found Xanax and a misdemeanor amount of marijuana. Joseph Willis was arrested and charged possession of alprazolam and possession of marijuana.

Both men were released on no bond.

“Released on no bond”. What the hell??

Wow! You folks at the Democrat should have had a front row view since this happened almost on top of you.
That would have made for a great Photo feature!

Lets face it, our government is way too concerned with prosecuting marijuana users. How many meth labs currently exist in Adams County? How many doctors are writing prescriptions to known substance abusers and pill heads in our area. There’s NO conclusive evidence that marijuana use or abuse leads to violent crime. Leave these people alone! Polls continue to show that nearly half of all Americans  approve of legalizing marijuana. MARIJUANA WILL BE LEGALIZED IN THESE TWO GUY’S LIFETIME. Why are we wasting tax dollars and law enforcement resources prosecuting this??? The local, state and federal government needs to focus on the real drugs threatening our community (meth, cocain, crack, presec drugs, etc.) Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barrack Obama have all admitted to smoking maijuana. Wake up people!

Drunk drivers kill people every. single. day. Alcohol, in many forms, continues to be legal. Why? Why is it OK to get sloppy drunk and go out and get behind the wheel yet you can’t smoke a J and chill out with a bag of doritos and watch Cheech and Chong? I realize that I used some stereotypes there and the fact is that I don’t smoke OR drink but I’m a very conservative republican who believes in decriminalization of Mary Jane. Tax it, sell it in certain shops like in Europe and lets help dig out of this recession/depression we’re in – let the pot heads lead the revolution….

Agree, I presume this happened in Justice Court since no judge was named, unless they felt Lillie was getting too much publicity lately.  I have known others with far less quantity that had to put up bond of significant amount and ultimately sentenced to 10 years.  Waiting to see the outcome of this one.

These two guys are harmless although they do party a lot their threat to society is non existent .

  • Anonymous

Federal charges maybe?  Released to move/destroy other evidence? Hmph. I remember the oldest one from Morgantown way back.  He was soooo cool. Everyone loved him and his cool name… but I digress…

  • Anonymous

Both men after booking did have a bail prior to their release.  Also, both have been arraigned.  Rest of report is correct.

    Thanks.

  • vilou09

    What’s cool about his name?

  • Anonymous

Two first names, that was new in 89-90.  You had to be there youngster.

Great detective work MBN… Nobody hears about mailing marijuana because nobody gets caught. If you do your research you would know that anything under 3 pounds does not get x-rayed. So my point is, why make an example of these two upstanding/taxpaying citizens? It’s not like they are on the corners behind the middle school selling crack. It’s kind of ironic if you think about it, the pond scum that exploit our country on a daily basis who dont pay taxes don’t mind if they get arrested. They get to see all there cousins and old friends, it’s like a family reunion in prison for these people. Which means you, me, Ben, and Joe pay for!!! Ben and Joe are anything but criminals, they are actually victims of an out-dated law plain and simple!

Well, it’s not O.K. to get sloppy drunk and get behind the wheel, but I do agree that it should be legal. Maybe one day soon, it will be, but right now, it is not. They were stupid and got caught. Their buddy that mailed it to them will be caught too.

It was a bad law. Put into place for racist reasons.

  • Anonymous

you smoke the grass, you mow the grass! nothing recreational about 4 lbs of pot. i could see if it was just a small amount for personal use and probably over look it, but 4 lbs?! wow…get some jail time, grow up, get a real job and check out the real world without the haze. poor joe. good hard working guy, just has a lazy idiot for a brother.

  • Anonymous

Hey Wilson Phillips, Yeah I’m white and you are wrong! It has nothing to do with race. It’s just not socially accepted and the existing government cannot figure out a way to tax it so thats why its still illegal. Can you make a valid point on why you think this law was passed for racist reasons? Minorities don’t have the brains, capitol, and overall motivation to turn a multi-billion dollar per year business into what it is today. Do your research Phillips… It’s called the war on drugs first introduced in 1971 by Richard Nixon. Which in case you think mathematics is race related… It’s a 40 year old law that has been an absolute failure. Race-related??? It’s obviously been too long this you took an American History class Wilson Phillips… You can resume commenting when you can make a valid point.

  • Anonymous

dont start making this a race thing. that crap has just about ruined this town. its illegal because it causes intoxicating effects on your body and judgement. plain and simple.

Back in the early 1900′s, the free labor of chain gangs made prison wardens quite rich. Slavery was over, but through peonage and incarceration for years for simple things like vagrancy, the black man was still subjugated. Making pot illegal just gave them more reasons to sentence black people to hard labor. It was a bad reason to make a harmless substance illegal.

Now, the prison system makes it money by fees per prisoner, paid by the local, state and federal governments. Our tax dollars at work to keep us safe. The more prisoners, the more money the prison system makes. Keeping pot illegal puts more people in the jails and more money in the prison system and still helps keep the black man subjugated. It is still a bad reason to keep a harmless substance illegal.

Ben has been a landman for the past 6 years which by the way is the very definition of a real job. You dont keep that kind of job if you are lazy and an idiot. You obviously don’t know either of them because anyone with a brother knows that if you insult one you insult the whole family. So grow old somewhere else besides Natchez you only child mamas boy… I do agree that 4 pounds is ridiculous. But your insults to the family about a good person going to jail are just uncalled for. Dork…

  • Anonymous

dork? haha awesome. ACTUALLY I do know the whole willis clan quite well. Joe and Chet are great men. Ben missed the boat. call a spade a spade. ben is an idiot. i’m sure he knows that now too.

  • Anonymous

Ask yourself one question. Would you rather your kids drive drunk or high?

  • Anonymous

neither. thats the point of education. you are a pretty terrible lawyer if thats your argument.

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

Sorry, but marijuana was made illegal in 1935. Not 1971. You should go read some history.

  • vilou09

Unfortunately, I guess I don’t understand the fascination of this nuance. And for that, I feel like a better person, lol.

  • Anonymous

Yeah Dork! The last time I read the article Joe was caught with Xanax and Weed. Ben was caught with weed. So what gives you the right to call Joe a great man and Ben an idiot? They are both great men. And if you knew them quite well you would know that both of them are great men. Whatever you have against Ben is probably due to the fact that you were made fun of by him at one point or another!!! Like i said your a dork and thats why you have no friends and are an only child mamas boy. Trust me I have 2 brothers myself, you mess with 1, you have to deal with all 3, whether right or wrong. So choose your words a little wiser. DORK!

  • vilou09

I’d rather them have the sense to NEVER get behind the wheel of a vehicle under the influence of ANY impairing substance. DUH!!

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

I may be a bit incorrect. I believe it was 1937 by the time enough states had ratified it. The Marijuana Tax Act took effect in 1937. That petty much put the last nail in the coffin. The “War On Drugs” came a lot later. What a failure that has been. Something is wrong when a person can be locked up longer for possession of weed, than for molesting children.

  • Anonymous

Early 1900′s??? Yeah the world has come a long way since you were born in the early 1900′s. Race related…. 112 years later and pot is illegal because of blacks? The country would make triple the money if they legalized it and taxed it than give out misdemeanor and felony fines they give out now.

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

I would prefer no one drive intoxicated. Pot or alcohol or any other drugs impair your ability to drive. That’s just a simple fact.

  • Anonymous

Nice wikipedia copy and paste… The point is the “War on Drugs” made the country enforce the law so it could profit thru the roof on simple minded stoners.

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

I didn’t copy and paste anything. I do however, agree with your point.

  • Anonymous

No you dont get it, again… say you had no choice! your child is drunk or your child is high, One or the other. Which one would you choose? I didn’t give the third option for being sober. Drunk or high? Only 2 options.

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

This would be a lot more fun if you could make a valid argument. What kind of lawyer are you?

  • Anonymous

Of course we do not want anyone driving intoxicated. BUT, I want a single answer from you people who didnt understand i’m not giving you that option. Stoned or drunk? Your reply should only be one or the other!!! Nothing else! So which is it?

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

I still say neither. Intoxication is intoxication. It doesn’t matter what the intoxicant is. You put out a trick question and it doesn’t fly.

  • vilou09

I refuse to entertain your idiocy.

  • vilou09

Why don’t you just get stoned AND drunk, then DRIVE off a cliff!

  • Anonymous

They are two completely different intoxications on several levels. Its not a trick question, and u still cant answer the question with one word.

  • Anonymous

You refuse to answer a hypothetical question. Yeah you might have to google that word for its definition.

  • Anonymous

An Oil and Gas Attorney, thats how I know for a fact Ben is not an idiot. And what do you do for a living Phillips?

  • vilou09

Dude. Are you simple? Shove off.

  • Anonymous

Well I hope I don’t total out your 1974 single-wide at the bottom of that cliff with the aluminum foil on the windows… Thanks for the violent referenec though. I’ll be sure and have you kicked off of here.

  • Anonymous

Ok vilou09. I’ll honk at you at the soup kitchen next time I see you in line when i’m on my way to work! Freeloader…

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

Well, that answers it. You’ve had lots of practice screwing people out of their mineral rights.

As for me, I do computer networking and write code.

I thought you might actually be somebody, but I was wrong. I admit that. You’ve bored me. I am going to bed.

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

    Moron. There’s your answer.

  • Anonymous

oh… the next Mark Zuckerburg. Too bad you were born a century too soon…

  • https://plus.google.com/101785462960818953428/posts Wilson Phillips

When you are walking through fields to check out those mineral rights you are screwing people out of and step in cow manure, do you look down at your foot and scream because you think you are melting?

  • Anonymous

That may be the absolute most ridiculous thing i’ve ever heard. i don’t know a single person on the face of the planet that actually “check out mineral rights by walking through a field?” Can you describe what a mineral right looks like? I’d love to know!!!

  • Anonymous
