Police ticketing those who block sidewalks

Published 12:01am Saturday, July 14, 2012

NATCHEZ — Natchez Sgt. Vince Bates said NPD is cracking down on vehicles blocking city sidewalks.

Bates said the department has received several calls from disabled residents claiming vehicles are obstructing the use of sidewalks.

Blocking a sidewalk, Bates said, is a violation of city ordinance and carries a $130 fine.

“Sidewalks are for the use of all citizens…and many people, including those with disabilities, use these sidewalks regularly,” Bates said. “The Natchez Police Department will appreciate the cooperation from the public.”

They also need to target people who don’t use their turn signals.

And throw out their cigarette butts at traffic lights, and throw trash on the roadsides everywhere, and forget about the radar guns for awhile to attend to these matters.  Judge Blough’s increased fines should discourage littering in the future.  If the city can fine and mow the property of landowners and apply the cost to their taxes, can a private citizen fine the city for not mowing the medians and charge it against their tax collections?

CRACKING DOWN STARTING ALL OF A SUDDEN. SGT. BATES, ARE YOU SAYING THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN GETTING AWAY WITH BLOCKING SIDE WALKS ? CALLS FROM DISABLED RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN COMING IN TO THE DEPARTMENT FOR YEARS. WHAT MAKE THOSE CALLS SO DIFFERENCE NOW? WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE SIDE WALKS ARE FOR. I REALLY DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS ARTICLE HIT THE PAPER. PUT SOMETHING REFRESHING IN THE PAPER SUCH AS: NPD WILL BE PATROLING HIGH CRIME AREA MORE FREQUENT, EVERY NPD OFFICER WILL BE ASSIGNED THERE OWN VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE WILL BE TAKEN HOME TO HELP DETER CRIME IN THAT AREA. THE NPD WILL HAVE A OPEN-DOOR POLICY EVERY SATURDAY. THE NPD WILL ENGAGE IN CLASS ROOM TO HELP EDUCATE STUDENTS ABOUT CRIMES. PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT DICTATEING. *JUST-D0-YOUR-JOB*.

They should also pay close attention to people who are carelessly parking in handicapped parking spaces who clearly are not handicapped or don’t have a sticker on their car or rear view mirror. It makes me so mad to see people park there just because they don’t want to walk, I’ve seen people with disabilities walk a good ways because their spots were taken and it was by non-handicapped people. Come on cops! Patrol these areas and write some tickets! Mostly in Walmart

I have a perfectly serious question, which you may know the answer to (or may be able to tell me who to ask).  I have a handicapped friend.  On good days she uses a cane, on bad ones a walker.  Her car has a permanent sticker on it, but it is getting old an unreliable, so I frequently take her places in my car.  Is it possible to get one of those rearview mirror hangers to use in my car when I’m driving her?  At this point since we generally take both the walker and the cane with us whenever we go somewhere I try to leave one clearly visible in the car.

If she is eligible for the permanent sticker, then she should also be eligible for the removable/hanging placard. And yes, it is perfectly legal (and morally acceptable) for the owner of the placard to be a passenger of the car, not just a driver.
I’d call the DMV and ask how she can go about getting one of those.

According to the cops I know , The new mayor wants to start enforcing all parking laws, liquor laws and. Driving laws. Silver St parking is a prime target now, The open container law will be heavily enforced very soon, the previous mayor put a stop to enforcing most liquor laws.
