More than $3K raised for Feed the Hungry in roadblock

Published 12:02am Saturday, July 28, 2012

VIDALIA — A roadblock in Vidalia to benefit Feed the Hungry Friday managed to raise $3,299 through donations by those traveling Carter Street.

Director Linda Bonnette said the organization usually has a roadblock on the last Friday before Christmas.

But with budget cuts trickling down to non-profit organizations, Bonnette said she’s had trouble getting the same amount of food than in recent years.

“We just haven’t been able to get our hands on any food this year,” Bonnette said. “We’ve been writing letters to congress to try and get some more funding.”

Bonnette said Mayor Hyram Copeland approached her about having the roadblock on Friday, and she graciously agreed.

Volunteers stood in the intersection of Carter and Cross streets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to gather donations from drivers.

I’m glad they got some money, but I hate how they did it. Those roadblocks are a huge inconvenience and annoyance to everyone that has to travel through there.

Do some fundraisers. Have a small “carnival” in the old vidalia market parking lot or in the ball parks during off-season.
Sell plate dinners. “feed yourself AND the hungry!”
Hold some raffles throughout the year.

NONE of those things that I mentioned (none of which took me more than 30 seconds to think up) are exclusive to any particular group around town.

Since Disqus cut me off, I’ll finish up here.

STOP hanging on the roadside with your hand out like vagrants and beggars!! That deflates any Positive repitoire your group may have with the community.

Get creative and find your own thing to do. Those road blocks have GOT to go!!

I agree, it is a inconvenience, and it does get annoying…. expecially if you have to go threw it three or four times duing the shuddle threw town.
But, most like myself, don’t mind for it is for a wonderful cause. These folks at ” Feed The Hungry” work very hard . It only last for a few hours.
Seeing the smiles on the workers faces make it worth everything. It does give one a warm feeling to help the needy.

We even seen Glen McGlothin, smiling as usual !!  All were hot, working hard, and smiling as they moved along.

     Yes

Agree, I had to travel through it several times.  One gentleman was extremely aggressive about jumping around in front of cars while waving his sign, was out in the middle of the lane several times.  VPD needs to contain this behavior at these events.

It’s one step short of robbing you!

Two roadblocks in one week?!  Wasn’t there one earlier in the week with some girls softball team?

The one I saw earlier should have never kicked off until they had a police chaperone.  I passed by them twice (once giving $) and about an hour or two later I finally saw a cop show up and park in the median.
