FAYETTE — A Jefferson County woman died Sunday in a one-vehicle accident on Mississippi 553.

Tabatha F. Davis, 40, 2384 Harriston Road, Fayette, was driving north on the highway when her 2001 Jeep Laredo ran off the roadway, flipped over and hit a tree. Davis was ejected from the vehicle, a Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The accident occurred at 2:42 a.m., just north of Fayette.

Davis was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead on the scene by American Medical Response ambulance personnel.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

All these wrecks lately with people being killed are happening very late at night, 12-4 am. I’m not insinuating people are doing anything wrong, but they have to be tired. Deer are everywhere around here at night.  I see them in the city limits Natchez before daylight, it’s worse in the rural areas. To see a roadside memorial popup, when it was not there the week before is sad. Drive careful.

Why is no one ever wearing seatbelts in all these crashes?

I don’t necessarily know the circumstances…but as far as not wearing a seatbelt–it is likely she wasn’t. But I do know when I had an accident that wasn’t my fault, I was wearing a seatbelt. When the accident occured, I removed my seatbelt when exiting the vehicle. The police claimed that when an accident happens, the seatbelt doesn’t retract, and issued me a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt, when I knew I had been! I had a bruise several days later from the seatbelt on my chest. But the ticket still stood, which is ridiculous. I also know that if a seatbelt is faulty, it may not have been latched all the way, may have broken internally and appeared to not have been latched, and may retract if the person unbuckled and stepped out of the vehicle.

Off my soapbox now, but my point is, sometimes people WERE wearing seatbelts and are still accused of not wearing seatbelts. I know people sometimes don’t wear them but in my circumstance I did.

My thoughts are with this family, and I hope they find peace.
