Natchez man arrested for price gouging

Published 10:12pm Wednesday, August 29, 2012

MEADVILLE — A Franklin County gas station owner from Natchez was arrested at his Roxie store Wednesday on charges of price gouging.

The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office investigated the case.

Kuldip Singh, 51, was arrested at approximately 6:30 Wednesday by investigators with the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office.

Kuldip Singh

Singh is accused of charging over his usual profit margin at the Roxie Truck Stop, which he owns.

A spokesman for the Attorney General said the office continues to warn that merchants cannot increase their average profit margin on products after the governor’s disaster declaration with a price gouging prohibition.

“Mississippi has been through enough emergency situations that businesses should know better by now,” Attorney General Hood said. “We have investigators out in the impacted areas and we will make more arrests if necessary.”

The Attorney General’s Office has received hundreds of calls related to Isaac concerning price gouging, primarily of gasoline. Anyone who suspects price gouging should contact the Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-281-4418.

Singh was booked into the Franklin County Detention Center.

Go back where you came from.  Gouge your own kind! We don’t need it! Looks like you should be kin to mohammed Atta, of American Airlines fame.

Let me start by saying I am not a racist. I consider myself a culturally consious individual… On the other hand this really pisses me off. In general deciet tends to be a common factor, when doing business with individuals of such pictured above. We grant all freedom and liberty entering this country. These individuals have taken over almost every country store in the U.S., run tax free businesses, but still choose to rip off fellow Americans. I am furious!

don.t forget the exon on morgantown road and 61 north raised there price from 3.55 to 3.79 and the shell on the bypa gss raised there gas 10 cent a gallon

Basic principle of supply and demand. If you don’t want to pay that price then go elsewhere. Our own government gouges us, the taxpayers, everyday.

any other  price gouging going on let everybody know about it

Is it Racist to say “Just look at the last name”.

If you can see past you’re emotion, you might recognize the allocation of scarce resources, aka ‘gouging’, a sound economic principle. Keeps people from filling up when they don’t have to,leaving more from the next guy. It encourages people to prepare for the next time. Shame on you if you vote for politicians that played your heart strings for their power, which they value over your welfare. Hold them accountable!

    Exactly, but don’t arrest!

They had another individual from the same ethnic group caught for the same thing in the Jackson area. They don’t care about anything but themselves. Have you noticed that a lot (most) of the 3 star and below hotels are run by someone named Patel? That’s not just Natchez and Jackson but I know of 3 in Arkansas and 2 in Galveston. All run by someone with the same last name. Wonder who is getting ripped off there??

  • Anonymous

Right, but as consumers, we have the right to spend money where we please and where we don’t want to.  I make it a point to not go simply because most of their stations and motels are not located in safe locations and not because of their ethnicity.  I refuse to go to any gas station where the clerk is surrounded by bullet proof glass and the store is barred down.  Of course, there are exceptions to any rule, but unless in dire straights, which thankfully I have not been in, I don’t give them my business.

Yeppers Teach, half the pitiful country are singhs or patels.Capitalization personally left off. They get loans we cannot get; buy convenience stores and cheap motels, do no repair or upkeep, let them fall down, and then get loans to buy more.

  • Anonymous

Howze about all the gas stations and the monopoly owned grocery stores in this area?

  • Anonymous

I don’t think what the man did amounts to price gouging outside of some arbitrary government definition.  There were no shortages, transportation blockages, etc. and people were free to go fill up elsewhere.

And for the Indian-bashers on this thread, go dig a hole and climb into it.  They are a hard-working and industrious people with generally good solid values.  You won’t see them sitting around and generationally dependent on your tax dollars for survival. Many of you could learn a thing or two from them.

  • Anonymous

We don’t “grant” anyone freedom or liberty.  It is theirs when they are born.  They didn’t steal those country stores, they bought them.  They come here for opportunity.  They see it and they act on it just as our forefathers did.  That is the American way.

Hellurrr…on monday gas at wal mart was 3.59…on tuesday gas at wal mart was back to 3.44 So what is wal marts excuse???

  • Anonymous

Agreed, Dave.  “Gouging”, and that is not what this is, helps prevent hoarding.  During Katrina, people here were fighting in gas lines, pulling guns on each other, etc. as they sought to fill up on cheap gas.   Never mind that actual “gouging” requires artificial shortage or collusion, neither of which was present int his case, regardless of the government’s definition.

no racism here, just facts:  we travel a lot.  we used to try to save money by staying at budget-type motels such as super 8, etc.  it got to the point that we almost could not find an inn run by patels.  so, we began to choose nicer motels like holiday inn express, etc.  same thing.  now, again, not racist.  our decisions were made based on the smell in the lobby.  curry.  one owner was cooking goat in his apartment.  nauseating.  so, while traveling now, if the inn has that “smell,” we turn around and walk right back to the car.  no racial issues here, but a strong cultural difference.  we don’t use curry, and we do not cook goat, especially in the oven, for crying out loud.  obviously, some patels are successful motel owners.  however, perhaps they do need to pay more attention to the guests they are serving, the great majority of whom are NOT indian, pakastani, etc.

My blood boils when I read about a foreigner pulling a stunt like this…Yesterday I’m standing on the side of my house, watering my wifes flowers..
I look  up and walking towards my front yard is a neighbor from down the street with another lady…The other lady stops and starts to pick tomatoes from my plants. Obviously, she does not see me standing about 30 feet away…I said, “Excuse me, but what are you doing?”  She is a bit startled @ being caught. I walk over and she is hold two red big boys…My neighbor is embarrassed, but did nothing to stop the woman from  helping herself.  The thief holds out her hands and says ..She has a foreign accent. I say “Look, if you want veggies, just knock on my door and ask. This is what we do in America.”  The neighbor’s face is red and starts making excuses…I break in & say ” Take those two, but next time—ask..”

Foreigners !!    What ya gonna  do?

In an ideal life we are born with freedom and liberty; however, this is the real world and the price for freedom and liberty is bloodshed and war. No matter what ethnicity you are in the U.S. someone pays the price. Too many of my peers don’t make it back home, children are without mothers and fathers, and psychological truama is the end result. The U.S. polices the world and lets face the fact that the majority of our wars are fought in foreign countries. No matter what ethnicity your background is of if you weren’t born in the U.S. to be an American is a privilege!

  • Anonymous

To live in the US is a privilege but that has nothing to do with rights.  All people are endowed by their creator with unalienable rights.  What is great about the US is that is enshrined into our law and those natural rights protected.  People in most other countries are not so lucky.

I totally agree with you “heavyonthemind”.. and totally disagree with “crackalakin”. These people come here, our government gives them tax free loans. They are a blight on our nation. Enough said.

These so-called “price-gouging” laws are a clear violation of constitutionally guaranteed private property rights. A person should be allowed to sell his goods and services at whatever price he wants. People are free to go elsewhere if they don’t like the price. These laws are counter-productive and actually hurt in emergency situations by reducing the incentive of producers to ship in supplies, and thereby causing shortages. The politicians are the ones who should be thrown into jail. I’ll be going out of my way to buy gas from this guy in the future. I’d suggest the politicians go to http://www.fee.org to learn a little about basic economics.www.fee.org to learn a little about basic economics.

Exactly right! This poor guy is being thrown into jail for exercising his private property rights! This country is no longer free!

IF THAT WAS A WHITE MALE PICTURE, DO YOU THING  IT WOULD BE THIS MANY COMMENTS?      Immigration policy aside, I’ve found my experiences with Indians to be positive, for the most part.  When I went to engineering school many were in my classes and a few, my instructors.  I found them to be studious, serious-minded and hard-working.  My former neighbors were an older Indian couple with a teenage daughter.  Both held doctorates and taught at the collegiate level.  They kept an immaculate yard and were great neighbors.  From speaking to them I gathered they were a very ethics and values-oriented family as they spoke of values they were trying to instill in their daughter.  Two Indian brothers own a convenience store near me.  I’ll sometimes chat with them when I’m in there.  They both worked other jobs and saved their money, one on a cruise ship and another in the oil business, I think, and decided to open a store.  It is a nice store and they are nice guys.

I’ve simply got no reason to have anything other than a positive opinion.
