Chief Lewis: Adversity has piled on, opponents are small group

Published 12:00am Tuesday, September 11, 2012

VIDALIA — Police Chief Arthur Lewis reassured a crowd gathered at the police department Monday of one of the most important policies and procedures in his department — an open-door policy.

Lewis invited citizens to a public meeting to discuss questions, comments and concerns about the Vidalia Police Department.

“My main goal is to open a line of communication between the public and the police officers of this department,” Lewis said. “Y’all came here as a group, but I want you to know that we have an open-door policy here, and the people are always welcome to stop by.

“If you want to know something, get it straight from the horse’s mouth.”

Speaking for more than an hour to a crowd filled with business owners, residents and even his family members, Lewis answered questions regarding the changes in the department since he officially took over as police chief in June.

“No other chief has gone through the adversity that I’ve gone through, but I welcome that every day,” Lewis said. “This department is going to be run off the rules and regulations that we have in place.

Lewis talks about the efforts of what he called a small group of disgruntled people to unseat him from office Monday morning during the meeting.

“And I know there’s some accusations against me, but the first thing to understand is that we have to follow and abide by the law.”

The accusations Lewis referred to include citizens’ frustrations after several officers and personnel were terminated and resigned — both as a result of behavioral issues and the city’s financial issues that caused 14 city employees to be laid off in August.

“When those people sat across from me in my office, all of them — except one — stood up and gave me a hug or a handshake and said, ‘I know you’re doing the right thing,’” Lewis said. “If I’ve terminated one of your family or kin, go home and ask them what about Arthur K. Lewis’ decision wasn’t right?

“If I can help them, I’d help them, but I’m not going to violate the law.”

In the city-wide layoffs, the Vidalia Police Department lost four employees — two of which were already on administrative leave for a traffic incident involving the Rev. Justin Conner in July.

Lewis said at the meeting that the department is now staffed with a total of 34 employees — including full-time officers, dispatchers and reserve officers.

In July, a group of Vidalia residents filled a recall petition against Lewis.

The petition must be signed by 33 and 1/3 of the qualified electors within 180 days for a recall election to be considered by the state.

Lewis addressed the petition by first having secretary Gayle Cowan read the letter his office sent back to the secretary of state’s office regarding the notice of the petition being filed.

“As a matter of record, I want it to be known that I and my campaign committee have no intention of asking the good people of this town to form a committee and pledge their hard-earned money to oppose the attempt of a recall,” Cowan said reading Lewis’s letter. “I believe this is an effort by a small group of disgruntled voters whose candidate did not win the election in March.”

Echoing the importance of the department’s open-door policy, Lewis said he was not angry at the residents that started the petition, but also said he wished they would have come and talked to him regarding their issues.

“I served my country for the right of people to think and say what they want,” Lewis said. “But if I have something to say to you, I don’t use no alias — I use Arthur K. Lewis.

“Anytime you want to do something right, you’re going to face opposition.”

This has nothing to do with who did not win.  ‘When will you learn?  This has nothing to do with race or who lost or any of the petty things you mention.  Stand up and be a man, stand up and tell the TRUTH about the things that you have done or not done.  Stop lying to the people.”  You had a meeting of about 20 people that showed up for you to rant at and most of those were family and friends.  What about the other 3800 voters in the city.  I am glad that you think it is a small group that is leading the petition that will make the outcome even more surprising. No one has asked the good people of Vidalia to donate anything.  These good citizens such as myself have searched out the people in the recall effort to offer them money or whatever assistance that needed to further the effort.  There has been an outpouring of support and help from the citizens such as never been seen in this community before.  I applaud these good people for a job well done.

    Time Will Tell !!!!
And you are going to tell me you got hugs & handshakes from the people you just fired. Please !!!!  Arthur K. Lewis didn’t want a real ”crowd”. But that is ok. He done what he set out to do. His crowd was that of family, his preacher, his employees that he told to be at the meeting. He did not want any questions, or he would have had it in the evening time, like the city hall meetings, scheduled ahead so others could plan on being there. This meeting was like having it on Christmas day.
From what people see and hear from the public. The Recall Petition is NOT about putting in one certain person in the position of Chief of Police.
It’s all about removing Arthur K. Lewis from this position. Knowing all the wrong actions & decisions he has done to the city, people, his employees, and his people who once stood beind him.
Some look at it like this :
You make a decision within your family to purchase a new car.  Then you go buy that new car. A week later, it starts going bad on you !!! Everything about that car is going bad. No matter how many times you bring it back to the dealership, they just can’t fix the problem.
The Answer:   Get rid of that car, and get one that performs like the first car was suppose to do. Just That Simple !!!!

I am glad that you think that there is only a small group involved in the recall effort that will make it even more surprising when you find out how many people are behind the recall.  The recall effort has not asked anyone to donated anything.  People have searched for people with the recall to make donations and to give support and assistance in whatever way they can.  I very proud of this community in the way they have rallied together to correct something that will always be known as a mistake.  This has nothing to do with race as the chief would like for you to think.  It has nothing to do with who lost.  It has everything to do with the law and they way it is not being enforced or administrated within the department.  I would say to the chief that he has a small group that wants to see him in office now.  That group has shrunk to his friends and close family and a few of his staff that who be hard pressed to get employment elsewhere.  Did anyone notice the big crowd of approx 20 people that showed up for his Tea Party.  The one question that was asked was skated around and never answered head on.  Time will tell as Blacksheep said.  Mostly time will surprise.

Looks more like a Lewis “family reunion” than a meeting.

  • Anonymous

blacksheep: you talk a big game. Where were you when the meeting was going on? Why didn’t you raise your concerns there, face to face and speak up? Typical bomb thrower from the sidelines.

The caption for that picture should have been, “You don’t know the power of the Dark Side!”

And for that clown who said it look like a Lewis reunion man go to the doctor and get your eyes and brain check.

All I heard at the meeting was a sermon. I thought I was going to hear how Lewis was going to address the thievery from his dispatch supervisor or the other crimes that have already been committed in that office by others. Instead he talked nearly nonstop for more than an hour and told lie after lie all the while preaching.

One of the biggest was that statement that all those he fired shook his hand and said he did the right thing. I personally have talked have talked to over 6 of the officers that he let go and they did not share his sentiment.

One of the officers was a reservist who had gotten his papers telling him of his impending deployment, upon turning in the paperwork to Lewis, Lewis terminated the officer! This officer’s record was spotless! There are laws concerning the can and can’t dos in the employment of veterans and active military. Arthur sure didn’t follow it!   Oh yes indeed Arthur Lewis is a real peach, PIT.

If the recall doesn’t get him out, he can count on one thing for sure, he will voted out the next election!

Lewis is a racist and an idiot, far more whites have been affected by his acts of stupidity. I doubt seriously that any of the qualified white officers that he has forced out felt the urge to hug the idiot. Let’s see, you’re destroying me and my family, I think I’ll give you a big ole hug. Tell a better lie next time, or better yet just drop off the face of the earth. You’re a loser and the whole community suffers under your leadership.

Spillma421 we know who the real racist is you and that fool blacksheep man I did 25 years in the military and came across lots of fools like you. I see Chief Lewis trying to make vidalia better but there always going to be people like you.

I MIGHT BE BLIND, BUT THE PICTURE I SEE IN THE PAPER SHOWS A LOT OF WHITE PEOPLE THAT I HAVE NEVER SEEN AT A FAMILY REUNION.

Please let this be an, “Andy Griffith-like” way of dealing (handling) with every day laws being broken.

There are lots of things that jump out at me about this article and the comments. First all the people in the comments stating that this was a “family reunion”. What picture are you looking at? Is there another picture somewhere that shows the other side of the room? Were all the people that were on the side of the room not shown his family? What information are you using to base your opinion that all the people there were his family? The majority of the people in that picture most definitely don’t look like they are there for a family reunion.

1blacksheep stated ” He did not want any questions, or he would have had it in the evening time, like the city hall meetings, scheduled it ahead so others could plan on being there.”
Not sure if you get the paper, or if you look at it online but he stated last week he was holding this meeting. How far in advance should he have listed it that he was holding a public meeting? If he didn’t want any questions, why would he have held the meeting at all? He stated over and over about an open door policy, why didn’t the people leading the recall stand up and start asking questions? Surely in a public meeting with the newspaper there, he wouldn’t have not answered your questions. If ever there was a time to confront him about what you consider wrong, illegal or unjustified actions and have those questions documented, that was your shot.

jammin1 stated “I thought I was going to hear how Lewis was going to address the thievery from his dispatch supervisor or the other crimes that have already been committed in that office by others.”
So obviously by your statement you were at the meeting. By this I can also guess you were not there for what others are calling a family reunion. What did Lewis say when you voiced your concerns? Surely if it bothers you this much, when you went to a public meeting set up for the citizens to voice their concerns, while you were there you voiced those concerns. Didn’t you?

I’m not sure what he means by a ‘small group’ of people when he is talking about the recall efforts. Could it be, because most of the people banging on doors trying to get signatures for the recall don’t even live inside the city limits of Vidalia? I mean that doesn’t make much sense to me. The people leading the recall, don’t live in the City limits, couldn’t have voted for him, and can’t even sign the petition. I’ve spoken to some of the people driving the recall and when you talk to some of them, they are all proud to talk about the “recall vehicle” driving around town, but if its the one I saw not too long ago with the big sticker on the back windshield, that vehicle had Texas plates and the owner lives in Ridgecrest.

  • Anonymous

Let’s see if the recall happens, if so we vote again to see, if not that means the majority of Vidalia is with Chief Lewis Again !

  • Anonymous

well lets start with how he campain he was pushing cards in people faces. and when you need to talk to the cheif  he would not talk to you thT WHY WE NEED A NEW CHEIF  te reason i say that is it sould not matter what color you are the cheif should talk to you no matter what . there was a 11 year old boy that call lewis a dude he got man and angrey and told the boy you dont say that you are to call me mr lewis.he also lets some people drink and drive . and  the is one man that gets off work @ 3pm and drinks and goes back to work 2hours laterlike when they fired the best man there was.thats why we need to pull togeather and get therecall angist lewis and get a new cheif.

if was for everone why was just a few knew about it cause it was just like always just for the people he know not for people he dont like or know

wildmanamacat you must be the biggest lier in vidalia .Chief Lewis have an open door policy policy. Man get a life . And stop breaking the Law.

  • Anonymous

wildman the petition is out there because of people like you, get over it Chief Lewis won put some love in your heart , have a good life.

  • Anonymous

I remember hearing the same saying from Maxwell supporters. Maxwell won, get over it.  He had to steal the last two elections, but he won. Now he is gone and I am over it!

So those who think Lewis isn’t doing his job and following the laws are just malcontents and shouldn’t open their mouths about the wrongs being committed by those in authority? That is what is wrong with this area and our nation now. No one wants to speak out about what is right and if they do, people belittle them and call them names or say something witty like you just did baseball2.

As for people not living in Vidalia, just how do you know where these people live? Do you know them personally or are you taking the word of a friend or family member?

I know who has the recall vehicle and he lives here.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QOWRCOKN5XEH3D7SJXUPYPM65M D'Wayne

It’s not like it takes a great detective to find out where most live. Go to True Info Alley, the people that run that site don’t really attempt to hide who they are or where they live, which is actually a good thing. They state their feelings and their opinions and don’t try to hide. Cudo’s to them. So no I’m not taking the word of a friend or family member about that. When I saw the vehicle with Texas plates I asked someone that had told me they were friends with the owner and they told me that he lived in Ridgecrest. So yes, I’m taking the word of a friend about where he lives. wildmamacat1979 said the person with Texas plates lived in Vidalia at the time of the election. So wildmamacat1979, do they still live down the street or did they move to Ridgecrest? If they live in Ridgecrest, they can’t sign the petition, unless like their tags, they haven’t changed their voting registration. Also wildmamacat, I’m not sure why just a few knew about it. It had been in the paper for all to see, not like he sent out invitations to just a few people. He put a notice in a public award winning newspaper. Many, many people were talking about it so I don’t think just a few knew about it. I just think most of the people made a decision to not show up.

i dont lie baseball2 he talks to who he want hes not for the people hes for people he knows i know for the fact ok just like pushing his vote cards in peoples face thats wrong he knew how face to push it in and who face not to push it in i dont brack the law he needs to be for the people not against the people.

and the meeting i never knew there was a meeting till i seen it in the papper thats he had a meeting and looks like a mad man that needs cousiling on anger promblems

One of the people on True Info Alley DOES live inside the city. She goes by kernel. So I would say she does have an interest in the city’s police dept.

Alot of those who didn’t show up were most likely at work on a Monday morning.

hey baseball2 wildmama ant no man need more school cant read that goes to show everyone they cant read or spell right how did they get a job down there

Sorry !!! Wildmamacat you should have been a man because you sound just like one , but I know you are not telling the real reason why you do not like Chief Lewis . Any person that read that trash you post knows . Please tell us , better than that , Chief have an open door policy.
