Ferriday gives up lead late in game, takes loss

FERRIDAY — The Ferriday Trojans trailed Homer by just five points with a little more than three minutes to go until the Pelicans scored two late touchdowns to pull away with the win Friday night, 42-23 at Melz Field in LHSAA District 2-2A action.

“We played a pretty good Homer team,” Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings III said. “We had opportunities to win the game. Our kids are beginning to understand what we expect from them.”

Homer looked like it was on its way to a blowout win after outscoring Ferriday 20-6 in the second quarter for a 28-15 halftime lead. But the Trojans would not go away that easy. A touchdown and 2-point conversion by Ferriday made it a 28-23 ball game, but Homer scored the game’s final 14 points to escape with the victory to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in district play.

“They made a few big plays,” Cummings said. “We missed a couple of tackles. The kids have a bad taste in their mouths because they felt like they let one slip away.

“The kids are fighters. It’s a matter of want to.”

Ferriday (1-6, 0-2) travels to Lake Providence to take on the Panthers at 7 p.m. next Friday.
