ACLU demands school stop prayers

Published 8:49pm Wednesday, October 17, 2012

JACKSON (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union demanded Wednesday that a south Mississippi school stop holding prayers and promoting religious activities at games and other events.

A letter from the ACLU to West Lincoln Attendance Center says the school in Lincoln County, with about 650 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade, violates the U.S. Constitution by incorporating prayer and other religious messages into school functions.

Lincoln County School District Superintendent Terry Brister told The Associated Press that religious activities aren’t allowed at public schools, but he wants to find out if it’s happening and to what extent before commenting further or responding to the ACLU.

The ACLU letter says that “West Lincoln students, faculty, and staff are routinely subjected to official prayer at numerous school events, including student awards ceremonies and banquets, school-day assemblies, teacher meetings, holiday celebrations, sporting events and graduation ceremonies.”

The ACLU letter said the school’s principal and cross-country coach, Jason Case, often leads the prayers.

“In addition to leading students in prayer, he sermonizes during faculty meetings and issues memos with Bible citations, which he encourages faculty to look up, study and follow,” the letter says. “He repeatedly urges members of the school community to model themselves after Jesus, who he claims is ‘the ultimate model of a servant.”’

Case did not immediately respond to a message left Wednesday at the school.

Bear Atwood, legal director of the ACLU of Mississippi, said the organization found out about the situation through a complaint from someone in the community.

“It’s really important for people to understand this is truly about the constitution. It’s about making sure that all children and all religious beliefs are respected,” Atwood said.

The ACLU also claims football coaches and other faculty members lead prayers and that religious “iconography permeates the school” with crosses on classroom doors and walls and a replica of the Ten Commandments on the campus.

The letter said the school district should take immediate steps to stop religious activities and tell the ACLU how it plans to address the issue by Oct. 26, or face the possibility of getting sued.

The ACLU also sent a public records request to the school that seeks a wide range of documents, including emails that refer to prayer or other religious remarks related to school events and agendas.

I KNOW GOD IS SCRATCHING HIS HEAD MORE THAN EVER BEFORE. HOW LONG IS IT GOING TO TAKE “SOME” PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CAN’T/DON’T RUN A COUNTRY FROM THE BIBLE. RELIGIOUS HAVE TAKEN A WHOLE NEW ROLE FROM YEARS AGO. “SOME” PEOPLE HAVE GONE OVER-BOARD WITH IT. HOW MANY PRAYERS DO IT TAKE TO MAKE IT INTO THE KINGDOM? THIS IS SOMETHING I HAVE STRUGGLE WITH FOR YEARS TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHY “SOME” PEOPLE ALWAYS TRYING TO PUSH THERE BELIEFS OFF ON SOMEONE ELSE. THEY GET MAD WITH THAT PERSON JUST BECAUSE THAT PERSON DON’T SEE IT THERE WAY. “SOME” PEOPLE REALLY FEEL THEY ARE GOD. THE COMMENT: “GOD-IS-ALIVE-AND-ANT’T-GOING-NOWHERE” WHAT DO THAT MEAN? I HAVE LOST LONG TIME FRIENDS, NOT BECAUSE OF THERE BELIEF, BUT BECAUSE HOW MANY TIMES THEY BRING IT UP. IF WE ARE FISHIG AND CATCH A FISH, THEY WILL SAY GOD PUT THAT FISH ON THAT HOOK. TO ME “SOME” PEOPLE WOULD FEEL MUCH BETTER IF THEY JUST SPEND ALL DAY AT THE CHURCH 24/7. PRAYING BEFORE A GAME; YOU MIGHT THINK THE PRAYER IS FOR SAFETY BUT IT’S NOT, IT’S A PRAYER TO WIN. THE OTHER TEAM IS PRAYING TO WIN ALSO, THAT’S WHAT I MEAN ABOUT GOD IS STRATCHING HIS HEAD ALL OF THE TIME. THERE IS A PLACE FOR PRAYING. YOU CAN’T PUSH YOUR BELIEFS OFF ON OTHERS THAT’S WISHING ANOTHER BELIEF. THERE ARE MANY OUT THERE IN MY BOOK ARE CONSIDERED RELIGIOUS-FREAKS. IF YOU CAN’T GET IN ENOUGH PRAYING ON SUNDAY AT CHURCH, GO BACK THREW THE WEEK AND GET SOME MORE. CHURCH AND YOUR HOME IS FOR YOUR PRAYING, SCHOOLS ARE FOR TEACHING. YOU CAN GO TO COLLEGE TO BE A MINISTER. IT’S A SHAME TO SAY; BUT THE REASON WHY SO MANY YOUNGER PEOPLE WITHDRAW FROM CHURCH IS BECAUSE OF THOSE RELIGIOUS-FREAKS. THEY FEEL THEY OWN THE CHURCH.

And yes, we students do pray. We are a religious public school in the way of, we have great examples. Our teachers and principal do not force prayer upon us. It is on our own will. Please help the West Lincoln community take a stand for our God and show the ACLU the true purpose of life. Thank you and pls keep us in your prayers

No one says the kids can’t pray on their own. But when the school sanctions prayer that’s crossing the line. I hope this stops. And the ACLU isn’t anti-religion. They are an organization to protect the Bill of Rights.

This makes me sick! To clarify my beliefs, I do not follow the typical, traditional Christian faith. My faith is more personalized to my beliefs, encompassing a variety of theologies. However, I refer to my ultimate authority as ‘my god’. I am NOT offended when someone prays. I have the right to join in, to abstain or to customise it to my beliefs. i choose to use this time to privately give praise to my god. i do NOT use it as a time to try to sway others towards my belief or to make a spectacle. Regardless of how or whom we choose to place our believe in, the important thing is for us to realize that we are NOT thr supreme power and that the universe does NOT revolve around us individually. This country was founded on the premise of religious freedom, whether we agree with the views presented or not. I would like to pose a few questions to the ACLU…. How can an agnostic or atheists beliefs right to express their opinions but a Christian NOT be allowed to express his belief? How is that religious freedom? Personally, I think the ACLU is trying to start drama. Whatever this school is doing, appears to be working well considering their academic placement. Leave them alone!

Usually I pay no attention to your blogs, I skip over them, because to me, they are wasted space that I find no rhyme or reason. A friend called me and told you you had referred to my blog. To set the record straight… I have the right to believe in my God. I do not push Him on others but if you feel offended or insulted when I do mention Him then you prove your stance as a heathen. I feel sorry for you that you do not know the greatest love a human can feel. It is a love and a strong faith that gives a person the strength to overcome life’s daily obstacles. I have the right as all Americans to speak my feelings, but you, as with other derelict Democrats, will use all ugly tactics to squash that freedom. I do not attend any church because I feel most churches now-a- days full of corruption. I was raised by God loving parents who instilled in me the great wonderment of God’s love. My brother was a Baptist minister. I give thanks every day that I had that opportunity to face life and it’s constant turmoil. Try it, you might like it, but should you continue in your disbelief you will soon be face to face with your friend, the devil.

So far I’ve not met a true God loving member of the aclu. They have taken America’s Constitution and screwed it around in any way they can figure out how to throw God out of America. Any true Christian would never be part of any movement that would work for those means. If you think the Christians will confrom to this, bow down to them, and run from them, keep on thinking. Christians can not and will not allow God to be thrown out of our beloved country.

God has nothing to do with the country. America is NOT a Christian nation…and never has been. The ACLU is against all religions that cross the line between the separation of church and state…not just Christianity.

I find it odd that so many people shudder at the word ‘God’ and take offense yet they don’t find it offensive to use American currency, which has ‘In God we trust’ clearly printed on it. Just Sayin’

The fact that dave would actually dislike a personal comment to me, such as this one, that does not cause any controversy whatsoever just shows the type of mentality behind his comments. It is a waste of time to confront the ignorance and unadulterated bitterness of ‘SOME’ people…pun intended!
