Opposing team victims of theft at Vidalia High

Published 12:04am Sunday, October 28, 2012

VIDALIA — Vidalia police are investigating a reported theft at Vidalia High School after personal items belonging to the Vikings’ Friday night opponents were reported missing.

Assistant Chief Bruce Wiley said the principal of Caldwell Parish High School reported personal items of the school’s football players missing at approximately 8:35 p.m. Friday.

Chief Arthur K. Lewis said the police department did not have its usual number of officers patrolling the campus during the game.

“Due to the city’s recent financial situation, I was forced to make cutbacks in personnel and reduce or eliminate overtime,” Lewis said. “This resulted in us not having the number of officers we normally have to patrol the entire campus during games, not just inside the stadium.”

Lewis said he will be talking with Mayor Hyram Copeland and the Vidalia aldermen to determine the best way to increase staffing to prevent similar incidents in the future.

No suspects have been identified, Wiley said. Anyone with any information about the theft is asked to contact VPD at 318-336-5254.

Please quit making excuses and blaming it on the financial situation. The financial situation has NOTHING to do with it. You had enough people during the other festivities going on on the riverfront, amphitheater, and many other gatherings of society. It has much to do with the QUALITY on hand. Most all the experienced officers has been let go.
And please don’t tell about there was “so many people”. The campus and stadium will only hold so much. Your going to have crime. We can’t help that. But we can try hard to prevent. And they need some sort of leadership over there in Vidalia, so they can catch these parasites that dwell on others. There is so much going on over in the Vidalia PD, they can’t take care of nothing else.

Excuses from Arthur. More of the same, never accountability or “pulling the thumb”….just “It was this other thing I couldn’t control.” True leaders just fix it, no excuses or blame shifting….they just fix it. More evidence that Vidalia has leadership problems like never before. Sad to say the last two leaders at VPD have been a major dissapointment.

Wonder what happened to the auxiliary unit that used to be a Vidalia PD. I know there used to be several men that were trained and certified by the State that were volunteers in the auxiliary. These men were used at all functions and that would let the full time officers loose to patrol and keep a handle on other things. The auxiliary was used in Chiefs Thornhill and McDonalds forces I know. What happened?

In Response to stalgsto, About the Auxiliary and Reserve Vidalia Police …..
There were men, who were post certified and trained by the best who DONATED their time, DONATED their equipment, and DONATED hundreds upon hundreds of manhours to the Vidalia Police Department. They are now gone for reason of the Chief of Police, Arthur K. Lewis, in the Vidalia Police Department. Some where told they were not needed in the department anymore, for he had ” his men ” to do their jobs. And others totally quit, for they didn’t what any part of what was going on in the VPD.
**** It is a shame that for many years, that the Vidalia Police Department, had enough TRAINED men, Reserve officers, who volunteered, at NO COST, to do anything, anywhere, anytime for the people of Vidalia. Now, with this leadership, they have NOTHING !!!!
You figure it out what is wrong. It’s a never ending story !!!!!

This has never happened in the history of high school football in Vidalia before. It is a shame that it has now.

Leaders don’t make a bunch of lame excuses. Lewis needs to go. The guy is an opportunistic buck-passer.

Why didn’t the ND report the break ins of cars and the Jonesville team’s bus at the Jr High during Thursday night’s basketball game? There were 5 officers at that game and they were all inside watching the game!

So that makes 2 nights in a row that this has happened. I can’t understand why after the Thursday night burglaries at the Jr High, security wasn’t ramped up at the High School Friday night?!

Now maybe people will understand why a Recall Petition has been started on Lewis. It is still going on too. Lewis needs to resign and let someone with real leadership ability lead the department.

If anyone is interested they can still go to that true info alley site and get any info they need about the recall and who to talk to.

I don’t know why he made excuses. You can’t have enough cops to watch us all at all times. I am assuming the thefts occurred in the visiting locker room. How many on here can recall an officer being assigned to guard the stuff in a locker room? Just a poorly trained kid who seized upon an opportunity to take someone’s stuff. The thief will tell someone and hopefully he will be found out by the authorities.

The article doesn’t say where the theft occurred…it could have been the locker room or the bus for all we know. If it was the locker room the police officer wandering the parking lot around the school building would have deterred a theft in the locker room…especially since there had already been thefts at the game the night before!!

Just saying that even when they are being diligent, the cops can’t be everywhere. Passing blame is rather Obamaish; might as well blame it on Bush as well as budget cuts. It is always a stain on a community when a presumed local steals from visitors.

What we are saying is during the administration of Tapper, this kind of thing didn’t happen. It didn’t happen while most of the experience officers were still on the job. It happened now because of the lack of quality in leadership and the officers he has hired or rehired, that were fired before, by other administrations. A leader is only as good as the people he surrounds himself with. Nuff said.
