Two seriously burned in Tensas Parish oilrig fire

Published 11:51am Wednesday, November 7, 2012

ST. JOSEPH — Two men were transported by air after receiving serious burns at the site of a land-based oilrig fire in Tensas Parish Wednesday morning.

Tensas Parish Sheriff Rickey Jones said emergency responders went to the scene of the fire at 9 a.m. today. The rig was located in the Buckhorn state game management area off of Louisiana 128 West outside of St. Joseph.

Jones said crews were capping the well there when gas bubbles apparently came up and ignited a capper truck that was backed up to the well and caught the well’s mud vat on fire.

The two men injured in the fire were treated on the scene before being flown to University Medical Center in Jackson. Jones said he could not give their names at this time.

The truck was destroyed in the fire, and Jones said the mud vat had some oil in it, which burned until it was gone.

“It was self-contained, so everything is taken care of right now,” Jones said.

The sheriff said the well is owned by Verona Energy and was being operated by Cress Oilfield Services.

The Louisiana State Police’s hazardous materials unit will respond to the scene today, Jones said, and first responders included the Tensas Parish Fire District, Northeast Louisiana Ambulance Services, the Tensas Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

That is my son-in-law. Tony LaPrairie. The father to my 6 grandchildren. My oldest daughter Leah’s husband. My wife and Leah just arrived in Jackson. I have my grandchildren that are not old enough for school. Thanks to dozens of friends, we will have the rest picked up at school this evening. Tony’s co-worker that was also badly injured is Wesley (TW) Brown. His wife is in Jackson now. Information still coming in. Just got a call from my wife. Dr’s in Jackson said they are about to airlift both to Georgia. Prayers needed and welcomed.

My son was also badly burned in an oilfield accident 5 years ago. The Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia works miracles!! I am so thankful they are going there. Not only will these 2 men receive the most incredible medical care, also their families and loved ones will receive an outpouring of support from the entire medical staff and the families of other burn victims there!! They will become your family!! Thoughts and prayers from my family to these 2 men and their families!!!
