Prep roundups: Cathedral boys top LaSalle

MONTEREY — Jarrell Johnson led a balanced scoring attack for Cathedral School with 12 points as the Green Wave defeated the LaSalle High School Tigers 41-34 Thursday night at the Monterey High School Basketball Tournament.

R.J. Givens finished with nine points, Rodney Hall added eight points and Jardarius Anderson had seven points for Cathedral, which won the game despite scoring just four points in the first quarter and six points in the third quarter.

Defense was another factor in the Green Wave’s win as it held LaSalle to under 10 points in each of the first three quarters.

Cathedral (3-3) will take on host Monterey, a winner over Harrisonburg, today at 8 p.m. in the second semifinal game of the boys’ bracket. Block will take on Northwood-Lena in the first semifinal game today at 5:20 p.m.

Tensas Academy girls 57,

Briarfield Academy 20

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — Hali Matthews led all scorers with 22 points and Madison Keyes had eight points as the Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs defeated the Briarfield Academy Lady Rebels Thursday night.

This game was all but over by the end of the first quarter, when Tensas Academy led Briarfield 12-2. Once halftime arrived, the Lady Chiefs were ahead 26-11 and they sealed the game by outscoring the Lady Rebels 23-6 in the fourth quarter.

Tensas Academy (5-3) plays host to Briarifeld Academy next Tuesday.

Monterey girls 47, Cathedral 32

MONTEREY — Reagan Tiffee led Monterey with a game-high 15 points and Kaley Baker chipped in with 10 points as the Lady Wolves defeated the Cathedral Lady Green Wave Thursday night at the Monterey High School Basketball Tournament.

Cathedral tried its best to stay with Monterey in this quarterfinal round game and trailed by only eight points, 26-18, at halftime. Then the Lady Wolves put the game away with a 15-6 advantage over the Lady Green Wave in the third quarter to go up 41-24.

Taylor Beesley led Cathedral with 10 points while Kennedy Gray and Sarah Beth Willard each had six points.

The Lady Green Wave (3-4) will next play at Centreville Academy next Tuesday. Monterey (8-1) will take on Harrisonburg, a 38-24 winner over LaSalle, today at 6:40 p.m. Block will take on Delhi Charter in the other girls’ semifinal today at 4 p.m.
