Prep girls: NHS falls 49-39

JACKSON — Claresa Banks led Forest Hill with a game-high 16 points as the Lady Patriots, one of the top teams in Class 6A, defeated Natchez High School 49-39 Friday night in an MHSAA Division 6-6A game.

Forest Hill led Natchez High 14-10 after one quarter of play, but the Lady Patriots had trouble putting the Lady Bulldogs away until the fourth quarter. That’s when Forest Hill outscored Natchez High 17-13.

Zyaire Ewing led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points and Rashonae Rice had eight points. Alexis Collins added 11 points and Anissa Jackson chipped in with 10 points for the Lady Patriots.

Natchez High (15-6, 2-3) plays at Brandon next Friday night.

Prentiss 82, Jefferson County 77 (OT)

PRENTISS — In a high-scoring game between Jefferson County and Prentiss, the Lady Tigers ran out of gas in the overtime session, and the Lady Bulldogs emerged victorious Friday night in MHSAA Region 7-3A action.

Brandy Buck led Jefferson County with 30 points and Keionne January poured in 26 points. Unfortunately for Jefferson County, they didn’t get enough help from their teammates. Myyah West led Prentiss with a game-high 31 points while Joy Powell had 15 points and Diana Walker added nine points.

Jefferson County forced overtime by outscoring Prentiss 20-18 in the fourth quarter to tie it at 71. However, the Lady Bulldogs scored 11 points in overtime while the Lady Tigers managed just six points.

Jefferson County (13-10, 2-4) plays at Crystal Springs Tuesday night.

Caldwell Parish 62, Vidalia 30

COLUMBIA, La. — Vidalia’s Shermel Bell led all scorers with 18 points, but the Caldwell Parish Lady Spartans used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Lady Vikings Friday night in LHSAA District 3-3A action.

Vidalia had an 11-8 lead over Caldwell Parish at the end of the first quarter. Then the Lady Spartans took over, beginning with an 18-4 advantage in the second quarter that gave them a 26-15 halftime lead.

The Lady Spartans took that momentum into the second half and there was little the Lady Vikings could do to slow them down.

Vidalia (N/A, 0-6) hosts Jena Tuesday night for Sweetheart Night.

Sterlington 37, Ferriday 26

MONROE, La. — Sterlington’s defense held Jada Griggs, Ferriday’s top scorer, to just six points and that made a big difference in the Lady Panthers’ win over the Lady Trojans Friday night in LHSAA District 2-2A action.

Sha’Keria Kelly ended up not only being Ferriday’s leading scorer, but she also accounted for more than half of the team’s points with 15. Sterlington jumped out to a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and slowly added to its lead the rest of the way.

Ferriday (5-15, 2-3) visits Lake Providence Tuesday night.

Grace Christian 33, Monterey 28 (OT)

MONTEREY — The Monterey Lady Wolves got off to a good start, but the second quarter couldn’t have turned out any worse for Monterey, as they went on to lose to the Grace Christian Lady Warriors in overtime Friday night in an LHSAA District 4-B game.

Monterey had a 14-10 lead over Grace Christian after one quarter of play. Then the Lady Wolves failed to score a single point in the second quarter and trailed 15-14 at halftime. However, Grace Christian allowed Monterey to hang around and the game went into overtime tied at 26-26.

The Lady Warriors ended up outscoring the Lady Wolves 7-2 in overtime. Monterey was led by Kristin Russell with 11 points. Hillary Goudea led Grace Christian with 10 points.

Monterey (16-7, 1-4) plays at Avoyelles Charter Tuesday night.

Wilkinson County 68, Hazlehurst 55

WOODVILLE — Linehia Palmer led Wilkinson County with a game-high 26 points as the Lady Wildcats picked up a win over the Hazlehurst Lady Indians in MHSAA Region 7-3A action Friday night.

Wilkinson County jumped out to a 15-9 lead over Hazlehurst after one quarter of play and then the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Indians 38-28 over the next two quarters for a 53-37 lead at the end of three quarters.

Ambernekia Palmer scored 12 points for the Lady Wildcats. Tasha Arnold led Hazlehurst with 17 points and Jenny Joiner added 15 points.

Wilkinson County (9-14, 4-2) plays at Franklin County Tuesday night.
