Prep boys: Vinson’s 20 leads Trinity to 50-46 win

NATCHEZ — Garrett Vinson led Trinity Episcopal with a game-high 20 points and Dre McCoy added 13 points as the Saints used a big third quarter to defeat the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 50-46 Tuesday night in an MAIS District 5-AA game.

Trinity went into halftime trailing Brookhaven Academy 23-18. But in the third quarter, the Saints’ defense held the Cougars to just six points while the Saints themselves put up 20 points to go ahead 38-29.

The Cougars tried to rally in the fourth quarter only to come up short as they outscored the Saints 17-12. Gage Posey led Brookhaven Academy with 14 points.

Trinity Episcopal (15-5, 3-0) hosts Columbia Academy Friday night.

ACCS 54, Columbia Academy 44

COLUMBIA — Led by Trey Fleming and Hunter Lindsey, the Adams County Christian School Rebels got off to a good start and never let up as they defeated the Columbia Academy Cougars in MAIS District 5-AA action Tuesday night.

Fleming finished with 17 points and Lindsey added 12 points for ACCS, which jumped out to a 16-12 lead after one quarter of play and then went into halftime leading Columbia Academy 32-23.

ACCS (8-15, 1-2) plays at Brookhaven Academy Friday night.

Vidalia 72, Jena 22

VIDALIA — Martel Wiley and Terrell Virgis led Vidalia with 13 points each as the Vikings had their way with the Jena Giants in a 50-point win Tuesday night in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.

Altogether, 12 players for Vidalia ended up in the scoring column. The Vikings led Jena 15-3 at the end of the first quarter and 31-7 at halftime. The Giants did manage to score 10 points in the third quarter, but the Vikings scored 22 points in that quarter to go ahead 53-17.

Vidalia (N/A, 4-3) plays at Buckeye Friday night.

Franklin County 58, Wilkinson County 50

MEADVILLE — Fred Nelson led Franklin County with a game-high 21 points and Trey Hannon chipped in with 17 points as the Bulldogs got a huge win over the Wilkinson County Wildcats in MHSAA Region 7-3A play Tuesday night.

Franklin County’s defense held Allenzae Staggers, one of Wilkinson County’s top scorers, in check on this night as he finished with just four points. The Bulldogs trailed the Wildcats 23-22 at halftime before grabbing the momentum and the lead during the third quarter.

Devin Voorhies led Wilkinson County with 15 points and Phillip Fountain added 12 points.

Wilkinson County (13-10, 5-2) hosts Crystal Springs Friday night. Franklin County (N/A, N/A) plays at Prentiss Friday night.

Jefferson County 52, Crystal Springs 44

CRYSTAL SPRINGS — Nicholas Brown scored 16 points and Ry’Ale Brown had 15 points as the Jefferson County Tigers defeated the Crystal Springs Tigers Tuesday night to move into first play by themselves in MHSAA Region 7-3A.

Jefferson County went into halftime leading Crystal Springs by just three points, 22-19, before putting the game away with a 15-10 advantage in the third quarter for a 37-29 lead.

Jefferson County (N/A, 6-1) hosts Hazlehurst Friday night.
