Boys roundups: Vidalia tops Buckeye

BUCKEYE, La. — Isiah Thompson led Vidalia with 19 points while Deion Brown and Julius Wilson had 15 points apiece as the Vikings held on for a 77-69 win over the Buckeye Panthers Friday night in LHSAA District 3-3A action.

After a high-scoring first quarter ended in a 20-20 tie, Buckeye went into halftime leading Vidalia 36-34. But in the third quarter, the Vikings took over on both ends of the court and ended up outscring the Panthers 25-11 for a 59-47 advantage.

Buckeye cut Vidalia’s lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, but wasn’t able to go on a serious run to put some pressure on the Vikings. Terrell Virgis and Dalvin Brown added eight points each for the Vikings.

Vidalia (5-3 in district) plays Tuesday night at Marksville.

Brandon 61, Natchez High 53

BRANDON — Natchez High cut a 13-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to just three at halftime, but Brandon made sure the visiting Bulldogs would not keep the momentum going in the second half as the host Bulldogs came away with an eight-point win in an MHSAA Division 6-6A game Friday night.

Natchez High got off to a rough start early and trailed Brandon 23-10 after one quarter of play. However, Natchez High responded by outscoring Brandon 19-9 in the second quarter to trail 32-29 at the half.

But Brandon had an answer of its own by slowing down the pace of play and making Natchez High play catch up. It worked as the host Bulldogs outscored the visiting Bulldogs 12-10 in the third quarter and 17-14 in the fourth quarter.

De’Arius Griffin led Natchez High with a game-high 22 points and Gary Woods added nine points. The Bulldogs (10-12, 1-5) host Warren Central next Friday night.

Brookhaven Academy 78, ACCS 48

BROOKHAVEN — Adams County Christian School played well in the first quarter on the road against Brookhaven Academy, but the Rebels went cold in the second quarter and that proved to be big as they lost to the Cougars Friday night in an MAIS District 5-AA game.

The Cougars led by just three points, 19-16, at the end of the first quarter before putting the game away during the next two quarters. They outscored the Rebels 18-7 in the second quarter and 25-13 in the third quarter for a 62-36 lead.

Chris Guedon led ACCS (8-14, 1-3) with 11 points and Lester Wells chipped in with nine points. The Rebels play Monday night at Parklane Academy.

West Lincoln 96, Cathedral 45

BROOKHAVEN — The Cathedral Green Wave got off to a sluggish start on both ends of the court against West Lincoln and was not able to get back in the game as it lost to the Bears by 51 points Friday night in MHSAA Region 7-1A action.

West Lincoln scored 31 points in the first quarter while Cathedral managed just 13 points. It didn’t get much better for the Green Wave in the second quarter as it was outscored by the Bears 26-10 to go into halftime trailing 57-23.

R.J. Givens led the Green Wave in scoring with 14 points and James Coley had 11 points. Cathedral (7-16, 1-7) plays Tuesday night at Piney Woods.
