MONTEREY — Karlee Woodruff hit a grand slam home run as Monterey scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the Lady Wolves’ 17-4 win over the Rapides Lady Mustangs Tuesday afternoon in LHSAA District 4-B action.

Monterey went into the bottom of the sixth with an 11-4 lead over Rapides before going on its big scoring barrage that ended the game an inning early, which was aided by Woodruff’s big hit of the game.

Winning pitcher Paige Bryan allowed no earned runs on three hits, struck out six and walked one in six innings. The only inning she gave up any runs was during the top of the third, when Rapides plated four runs. The Lady Mustangs were aided by most of the Lady Wolves’ six errors. The problem for Rapides was that Monterey already had a 7-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves wouldn’t let the Lady Mustangs get any closer as they scored 10 runs over the final four innings. Woodruff also had a double and ended up going 2-for-2. Jody Duncan was 2-for-2 with a double and Ashley Blake was 2-for-4 with a double.

Monterey (8-6, 2-1) will host Oak Hill at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Block 7, LaSalle 1

JONESVILLE — Micahla Hughes pitched seven strong innings and went 3-for-4 with a double as Block defeated the LaSalle Lady Tigers Tuesday afternoon in the Lady Bears’ LHSAA District 4-1A opener.

Block scored in four of the first five innings, including two runs in three different innings, to take a 7-0 lead. LaSalle scored its only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Hughes allowed just two hits, struck out one and walked on in a complete-game performance.

Shauneisha Crumpton also had a big game at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Block (6-7, 1-0) will host Montgomery at 4 p.m. Thursday.
