NATCHEZ — After several years of not hosting any fundraisers, the Natchez-Adams Softball League is inviting anyone who is interested to participate in a co-ed softball tournament April 20.

Bridget Wactor, secretary of the board for the league, said the tournament will help raise funds for softball equipment, as well as netting for the league’s batting cage. The money will also go toward general upkeep of the facilities, which are located on the campus of Natchez High School.

“There’s a lot of money that goes into doing upkeep,” Wactor said. “We built the fields and don’t get any help from anyone else (taking care of them). The recreation council will help with getting lights worked on sometimes, and Natchez High uses the field because it’s on their grounds, but they don’t put any money into it.”

Two teams are currently signed up for the tournament, and Wactor said she’s hoping to get at least four in so it can be a regular tournament and not a round robin. The cost is $150 per team, and the league will be selling plate lunches and will have concessions. Prizes will also be given away.

Wactor said the overall signup numbers for the league are up compared to last year, and having plenty of equipment and good batting cages are important to young girls in the community.

“That’s what we’re there for, so these girls can have something to do,” Wactor said. “Every child can have the opportunity to play softball and make new friends. That’s why we draft every year, so they won’t be with the same people.”

Wactor also said she’s looking to help local businesses in purchasing sponsorship signs. For more information, contact Wactor at 601-597-1419.
