Natchez man dies after auto accident

Published 12:03am Sunday, April 14, 2013

NATCHEZ — A 91-year-old Natchez man died from injuries he sustained Saturday night after his truck was struck from behind on U.S. 84 and flipped into a ditch.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Rusty Boyd said John H. Buckles was traveling westbound in the right lane on U.S. 84 at approximately 7:23 p.m. near the Adams County Correctional Center when his vehicle was struck from behind by Cameron Collier, 34, of Natchez.

When Collier’s 2004 Chevrolet pickup struck Buckles’ 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck, Buckles’ truck was knocked off the road and landed upside down at the bottom of the hill on the right side of the road, Boyd said.

Buckles was airlifted from the scene and died en route to an Alexandria hospital, Boyd said.

Collier was not injured in the wreck, Boyd said.

Alexis Harris, 29, who was a passenger in Collier’s truck, was taken by ambulance to Natchez Community Hospital with minor injuries, Boyd said.

Collier was charged with driving under the influence causing death at 10 p.m. Saturday night.

MHP, ACSO, the Natchez Fire Department, the Air Evac Lifeteam and other emergency personnel responded to the wreck.

By the time this article came out, Cameron Collier had already been arrested for DUI resulting in death/dismemberment. It’s a very sad situation. My heart goes out to the Buckles family.

You live 91 years only to die at the hands of an idiot who decided to get behind the wheel of a vehicle drunk?!?! What a shame! Throw the book at him!

  • 1HeartbrokenGyrl

A wonderful treasure has been stolen from us.You never know when your last day will be but it warms my heart to know that he knew he was appreciated and loved abundantly. Mr. Buckles was a kind, sweet, loving person who would give you his last. He will never be forgotten but loved eternally.

  • Anonymous

I hope Mr. Collier is punished to fullest extent allowed by law. How selfish can you be to drive drunk? My heart and prayers go to the Buckles family. I pray that others will see the loss and hurt, on both sides, caused by drunk driving and learn from it.

  • Elizabeth Lopez-Smith

He was a great, GREAT MAN and loved by many!!! We’ll miss you Granddaddy!!!

  • Brandi Williams

As much as I’m saddened to hear about Mr. Buckles death, Cameron is a good friend of mine, and he may not have made the right choice by driving, but he is very loved by his family and friends, and we are all hurting from this. Cameron also has children that love him very much that will suffer from this, so please keep your rude comments to yourself. in no way at all am I tryin to sound selfish by sayin this, or that Cameron was right, but he’s still human, and it could’ve happened to anyone of you or your family or friends, so look at his from that perspective before you judge him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shannon.wilson3 Shannon Wilson

you were blessed to have had him 91 years!!

It still amazes me how ignorant this town is. Quick to open your mouth about things that you know nothing about. Why don’t you bring an educated argument to the table. To break that down for you- educate yourself on the details of what happened before you speak.

  • Brandi Williams

    Amen!

  • LA_girl2121

Brandi you couldn’t have said it better!! Cameron is a wonderful carrying person, he did make a poor decision by drinking and driving but the people on here commenting are uneducated to the fact of the matter and the events that took place other than Cameron driving after drinking. Not many in this town and say that they have never driven drunk!! I’m sure the grief that he will have to live with will be nothing compared to what ever the judge rules!

  • Anonymous

Cameron may be a loving and caring person, and yes he has family that love him and are upset right now….and I agree Cameron did make a poor decision to drink and drive. For those of you that know him, know that that wasn’t the first time he made that decision. He has driven while drinking ever since he started driving. So don’t defend what he did. He knew better.

  • Educate

Farrar, do you even know how it happened?

  • Brandi Williams

Yes, he may have known better, but have you done things that you aren’t proud of? I know I sure have. Everyone makes poor decisions everyday.. Some people just get caught doing them. Who are you to judge anyone? The good lord is the only one that judges us that will actually matter.

  • Brandi Williams

And I wasn’t defending what he did, I was simply stating that he is still a human being that is loved by many, so out of respect for his family and friends that are also hurtin, please don’t post negative comments about him. It could’ve easily been your family as it was him.

  • Anonymous

Oh yes I have done plenty that I’m not proud of and I’m not judging…that day will come soon enough for all of us. And what happened last night may have happened even if alcohol wasn’t involved, but it was. So that makes it worse for all involved.

  • LA_girl2121

are you aware that this 91 year old man was doing well under the speed limit and you are myself could have been the person to hit him, bcof looking away for a split second. People need to respect the fact that Cameron has 4 children who can all read and see what stupid uneducated post that you are posting! Please people keep in mind how you or your family would feel in this situation it could be anyone.

  • LA_girl2121

very sorry for your loss will be praying for your family as well as the others.

  • Elizabeth Lopez-Smith

It’s all about accountability. Because he chose to drink and drive he took someone’s life. Just because he didn’t mean to do it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Wrong is wrong.

  • Educate

Well said! I’m sure going 10 mph in a 65mph zone is safe, right?????……there’s this thing called a “minimum speed limit” on interstates…usually 40mph for a 70mph zone…..so that would equate to 30mph in a 65mph zone if that law were put in place for highway 84 making 10mph a hazard to other drivers whether or not alcohol is involved. There’s also this thing called statistics. If you look up statistics for accident and fatality rates of the elderly, you may learn something. No one here is innocent.

  • Educate

Really? Have they determined that alcohol was the CAUSE of the accident?? No, they have not.

  • Lindsey Shelton

    Mrs. Lopez-Smith,

This is Lindsey Shelton with The Natchez Democrat. We are so sorry for your loss. I am writing a story updating the situation for tomorrow’s paper, and I would love to include memories and photos of your grandfather from you and other members of your family. You can call me at 601-445-3550.

    Sincerely,

    Lindsey Shelton

  • Elizabeth Lopez-Smith

Alcohol MAY not. That makes it worse. DUMB and stupid driving on a sober mind is a dangerous thing.

  • Elizabeth Lopez-Smith

    I will contact you.

  • Educate

    Illogical.
Cameron had no business driving after drinking, just as John had no business driving in his condition.

  • Elizabeth Lopez-Smith

John didn’t KILL anyone. Cameron N. Collier did.

  • Educate

Take your emotions out of the situation and look at the facts of how it happened.

Man!! I couldn’t agree more!!!! I was furious while reading the story and when I read he was driving under the influence, I was livid! Not a scratch, yet took someone’s life! Yes, it is hard on both families, but folk need to stop the foolishness and UNDERSTAND, their behavior affects just more than them! SELFISH!!!!!

  • tonya smith

I know first hand that stories are printed with ASSUMPTIONS only in this paper. You should never believe anything you read until the person accused is tried and convicted. People that are innocent are arrested on a daily basis. INNOCENT until proven GUILTY poeple!

  • collier1584

I am just dumb founded of how ppl come out and say things wo even knowing what really happened…yes I am family on the collier side but this has affected me for both families..I’m very sorry for what has happened..but instead of judging someone that u don’t even know that’s hypocritical..we have children whose life will change forever..the Lord makes no mistakes..best thing to do right now for both families is pray pray pray..Cameron know u r n will always b my blue eyed baby..I love u my blue eyes!!! I’m here…

  • Brandi Williams

    Amen! Very well said!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tammi.coldwell Tammi Coldwell

    Once again…..ignorance.

  • tonya smith

I myself am going through people assuming what they have read in this paper. It is a shame how people in this town are.

  • collier1584

And he as well has a family that loves him no matter what obstacles are thrown their way!! God is great and I have my faith in noone but him..so before u speak out of context look at them 4 beautiful children bc its also their life..this could have happened to anyone! Never assume..

I am deeply sorry for The Buckles family, and will not at all say they don’t deserve to be angry and hurt. But, Knowing Cameron personally, I can promise this family that he is more remorseful than they will ever know. Cameron is a good person, father, and friend. Nomatter what transpires from here on out, I would ask everyone of you to promise you have never had a drink and driven. Ny no way is it right, but I can say in my younger days I did along with all my friends. The wreck didn’t occur because he had drank that day, It’s not confirmed that that’s why. Please think about his wife and children during their time also. Praying for all involved!

Yes he did have a girl with him and her name is in the paper as well, and yes she chose to do the same and yes she is just as guilty !

  • concerned redneck

This is just bad all the way around. Folks let both families grieve. I argue with people on here all the time but this is a case where we should let it play out. I will say this though the blame should never be put on an elderly man because he mite have been driving a little slow. That’s garbage. I wish both families strength threw this horrible situation

  • Shannon Beatty

This is a horrible situation for both parties involved. Cameron is a real good friend of mine and will help anyone out at anytime. Could not ask for a better person. He just left my house that day and I can say with out a doubt that he was NOT impaired. Yes, he might have been drinking, but he was NOT drunk! He had no more in him then anyone that goes to a restaurant and orders a few drinks with their meal and drives home……This wreck could have happen to a sober person, but the fact that he had a few drinks is what is making this so bad. I am deeply saddened about Mr. Buckles and my prayers are going out to his family. This was an accident, not something he meant to have happen! Cameron wouldn’t hurt anyone on purpose. Just please keep both families in mind, prayers are needed for both. Thank you.

It is in extremely bad taste for the friends and family of the killer of this man to come here and try to garner sympathy for an irresponsible killer. You people should be ashamed but it is apparent you have no shame. You even have the gall to call others “ignorant”. You are nothing but unadulterated white trash and horrible excuses for human beings.

My sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Buckles. For the family and friends of the killer, for the love of God learn some class.

So sorry for your loss Buckles family.

  • collier1584

White trash..oh my..so u do no wrong? O u were put on this earth perfect..talk about judgement..this isn’t an argument and I don’t recall calling or seeing ignorance anywhere..but I myself will let the good Lord judge me and everyone’s life that’s not your call..and my sympathy goes to both families bc this was tragic but both had a family that loved them..period!! Have a blessed day!!

  • sher rich

This is such a sad story. But people no one is winning on either end. Both families are loosen. So one lost a grandfather or father. And also this kids can loose theres to the system. Lets just pray for both families. Lets not judge, things happen. No one wants to loose a love one. Either way.
