NATCHEZ (AP) — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says police shot and killed a 25-year-old Natchez  man who fought with and then shot at officers investigating a highway wreck.

Spokesman Warren Strain said Sunday that Justin Tyler Harrigill died late Saturday night on Interstate 55 South about a mile south of Crystal Springs.

Strain said in a news release that Harrigill became uncooperative after a state trooper found his wrecked car about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. He says the trooper called for help, and more troopers, Crystal Springs police and firefighters, and a hospital rescue crew responded.

Strain said nonlethal measures had no effect on Harrigill. He said Harrigill was shot after pulling a handgun and firing at the officers.

Incompetent state trooper, who just happens to be black, uses taser on an accident victim. Stupidity of poorly-trained trooper achieves mixed results. Trooper must have slept thru the part of taser training that says tasing people with unknown head trauma, the combative accident victim, can lead to undesired outcomes. Meanwhile, MHP is investigating its own incompetent trooper. The whole thing doesn’t pass the smell test, but I somehow don’t hear all the clamoring for an independent, maybe even federal investigation. Worst of all, media seems content to sit idly by and let the state conduct its own unethical investigation. The people deserve to know what happened here. Not likely to happen, without an totally independent investigation.

This gentleman had been working in Jackson and was an insulin dependent diabetic…hope they are investigating this as I do not feel he deserved to be shot and killed!!

I don’t know why everyone is so upset. I don’t care WHO it is and WHAT’S wrong with them; anyone coming at me with a pistol and FIRING it…deserves to be shot.

Really sad if he was in some kind of medical delima. Having said that if he fired shots at the cop they are trained to put two in the chest. Sucks for everyone. I’m pretty sure that trooper didn’t go to work with the intentions of killing someone. And no matter what the trooper skin color was I’m pretty sure he would have shot no matter what color person was shooting at him

The incompetence of the trooper, and not the color of his skin, is more of the issue. The guy (accident victim) didn’t attempt to shoot anyone, until after he was stunned multiple times. And since we do know the race of the accident victim, the skin color of the trooper would be very relevant, if the shoe where on the other foot, now wouldn’t it? Seriously doubt the trooper intended to ever kill anybody, don’t even know for a fact that he did. The state just needs to be sure that these stun guns are being used properly. Accident victims, not in their right minds, don’t deserve to die. From what little bit of factual info that’s available, that appears to be what happened here, rightfully or wrongly. Just calling for a thorough investigation.

This was my cousin who was shot.I am not ok with him shooting at them in any way,but they could have just injured him.Now he has a wife and 13 month old without a father.

I understand that this person was someone’s child, husband , friend or brother. But, he shot at police officers and their lives were in danger. So, do u feel they should have taken a bullet and let him lived??? I was always told if you pull a gun intend to use it, and he did that. It does not matter what color the skin is. A bulket has no name on it.. I do feel sorry for the families on both ends..
