PHILADELPHIA — Derrick Brumfeild pitched a complete-game shutout and got plenty of run support as the Franklin County Bulldogs needed just five innings to defeat the Philadelphia Tornadoes 13-0 to even this MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs first-round series at one game apiece.

Franklin County (15-9) will host the deciding Game 3 at 6 p.m. Monday, but that could be subject to change. Bulldogs head coach Brent Calcote said that Philadelphia wants the game to be played at 3 p.m. today. As of late Saturday, no decision had been reached.

As for Brumfield’s solid outing on the mound, Calcote said, “He did good. He threw a bunch of strikes.”

The Bulldogs gave him a big lead to work with right out of the gate as they scored six runs in the top of the first inning. They scored two runs in the top of the second, three in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the fifth.

Ethan Verduin and Caleb Fairley each had two base hits to lead Franklin County at the plate.

“We had a chance to win the first game, but we couldn’t get the key hit. Today, they walked a few of us, and we hit the ball pretty well,” Calcote said.
