The event is free to the public.

“‘Old time music’ is actually the name for a type of music,” said Robin Person, director of Historic Jefferson College. “It uses a lot of fiddle, banjo, dulcimers and bass. It is very similar to bluegrass, but it is not exactly like it.”

Food vendors will be on site, as well as a master gourd banjo builder, Person said.

“People are welcome to bring a lawn chair and cooler with a picnic lunch and kick back and listen to music all day long,” she said.

While the old-time music concert is happening, Historic Jefferson College will play host to a fiddle contest with a top prize of $500.

Those who want more information about the fiddle contest may contact organizer Robert Gray at 601-984-1210.

Delta Sigma Theta Debutante Cotillion

The Natchez Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta will host its 21st annual debutante cotillion at the Natchez Convention Center at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets to the semi-formal event are $10 at the door.

Cotillion co-chair Alma Johnson said the annual event is for young ladies making their debut into society, and will also have junior debutants, Delta dolls — who are aged 6 and 7 — and angels, aged 5.

“We put together a lot of activities and cultural events for the young ladies making their debut,” Johnson said. “We encourage everyone to come out and support the young people.”

International Paper Quarter Century Club

The International Paper Quarter Century Club will have its annual meeting and fish fry from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez Shrine Club.

The meeting is for former IP employees who retired after 25 years of service or more, and organizer Mildred Hughes said the company still supports the annual meeting even though its Natchez operations were shuttered in 2003.

Natchez Festival of Music

The Natchez Festival of Music will have several events this weekend, including:

•“The Black Swan Returns,” a musical tribute to Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, the soprano who was born into slavery in Natchez in the early 19th century but went on to achieve renown in Europe.

Tickets for the event, which has two performances at 5 and 7 p.m. Friday, are $20.

•“Kiss Me, Kate,” the Tony-winning 1948 musical by Cole Porter based on Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.” Tickets for the event, which will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center, are $30.

•Musical wine tasting at BriarVue at 4 p.m. Sunday. Participants will evaluate wines while listening to music in a setting overlooking the Mississippi River. Admission is $40.

•“Rossini, Puccini and Martinis,” a free performance of opera arias at 7 p.m. in the Natchez Eola hotel lobby.
