FAYETTE — Jefferson County and state law enforcement officials are investigating the death of a 24-year-old woman whose body was apparently discovered in the graveyard of East Mount Olive Baptist Church Wednesday night.

Jefferson County Coroner Ricky McDonald said he responded to the church on Mississippi 552 at approximately 7:25 p.m. McDonald declined to identify the woman or the cause of death, as he, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation were still processing the scene as of 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim’s body will be taken to the state crime lab, where an autopsy will be conducted and a cause of death will be given to the family at that time, McDonald said.

Law enforcement gathered evidence at the scene as more than 30 onlookers gathered nearby. The victim’s body appeared to have been found near a shed in the corner of the graveyard.
