Ferriday Belles fall to Winnsboro, 6-3

MONROE, La. — The Winnsboro All-Stars jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and then held on to defeat the Ferriday Dixie Belles 13-15 All-Stars 6-3 Sunday night in a winners’ bracket game at the district tournament.

Winnsboro scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and it looked like that would be more than enough run support for starting pitcher Lexi Poindexter. However, after pitching three straight shutout innings, Poindexter ran into trouble in the top of the fourth and gave up three runs.

Ferriday’s bats, however, were pretty much ice cold against Winnsboro pitching as the Dixie Belles managed just one hit — a single from Maecee Thornton.

Winnsboro answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to finally put the game away.

Jania Burns was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and two walks with no strikeouts in the first inning. Bailey Book came on in relief and gave up two runs on five hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts in five innings.

Ferriday will look to stay alive in the district tournament when it takes on the loser of the Winnsboro/Mangham game at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
