JONESBORO, La. — The Vidalia Little League 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars didn’t have a single extra-base hit in their 16-9 win over Blanchard Sunday afternoon at the state tournament.

However, they did not need them. The Vidalia 11s and 12s took advantage of 10 walks by Blanchard’s pitching as well as several miscues in the field to jump out to a big lead.

“When you have that many walks and sprinkle in a hit, that’s going to happen,” Vidalia 11-12s head coach Leigh Anne Mason said. “They committed a lot of errors, too.”

Shelby Mason got the win despite allowing seven runs on three hits, five walks and one hit batter to go with seven strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings. Bailey Yates got the save after giving up two runs on one hit with three walks and one strikeout in one and one-thirds innings.

The Vidalia 11s and 12s had a chance to 10-run rule Blanchard, but untimely walks by both Shelby Mason and Yates in the final two innings prevented that from happening.

“In the fifth, Mason walked two batters. In the sixth, Bailey walked three,” coach Mason said. “The Blanchard team never gave up. They pushed and pushed to keep themselves alive. They made us work for it.”

Caroline Cotten went 3-for-3 while Kelsi Cavazas was 2-for-2 and Mason helped her cause by going 2-for-5 at the plate.

The Vidalia Little League 11s and 12s play at 7 p.m. today against the loser of the Bossier Parish/Evangeline Parish game.

“If we win (today), we’re guaranteed second place,” Mason said. “Right now, we’re guaranteed third.”
