NATCHEZ — A new grocery store will be opening in Natchez, Mayor Butch Brown said.

Save A Lot Grocery will open a location in the former Walmart in Magnolia Mall and will create 100 jobs, Brown said during Tuesday’s meeting of the Natchez Board of Aldermen.

Save A Lot is a discount grocery chain headquartered in Earth City, Mo., and has approximately 1,250 stores nationwide. Save A Lot is a subsidiary of SuperValu.

The Save A Lot website indicates most of its locations are licensed to owner-operators.

Brown said he has not been given an exact timeline for when the store will open. Exterior work at Magnolia Mall has been going on for several weeks.

The mayor said his understanding is that the store will be approximately 55,000-square feet.

“Everything is either under construction or about to begin,” Brown said. “These jobs are usually a few months in the making, not years.”

A spokesperson for Save A Lot said she would gather information about the Natchez project, but was unable to do so before the end of the business day Tuesday.

The owner of Magnolia Mall, Grover Yelverton, could not be reached for comment. He had previously said he could not comment about the matter.

“We are pleased to know that the city is still being regarded as a place to do business and to come and do business, and that they have confidence in our economy and the people who live and work here,” Brown said.

“We know that they have good talent and these are good, bill-paying jobs. We are delighted to have them.”

The mayor also said a new department store unrelated to the Save A Lot store would be opening in the same shopping center soon, which is expected to create 45 jobs.
