Centreville caps off regular season with win
AMITE, La. — Casey Haygood accounted for 414 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as the Centreville Academy Tigers defeated the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets 35-21 Friday night.
The junior signal-caller completed 11 of 21 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns. His TD passes went for 78 yards to Mark Curry early in the second quarter and 85 yards to Jordan Clark with 1:11 to go in the second quarter.
Haygood also led Centreville in rushing with 111 yards on 13 carries, including a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs. Clark finished with two catches for 95 yards and Colby Shaw had five receptions for 39 yards.
Nearly every time it appeared that the Tigers were about to blow the game wide open, Oak Forest made sure that would not happen. After Haygood’s second touchdown pass, Dylan Dover returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to make it a 14-7 game with 58 seconds left in the second quarter.
Then Haygood’s first 1-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds remaining until halftime gave the Tigers a 21-7 lead at the break. His second 1-yard TD run with 9:06 to go in the third quarter gave them a 28-7 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Hasson to Kaylin Stewart with 4:04 left in the third quarter.
Curry scored on a 4-yard run with 9:28 left in the fourth quarter to give Centreville a 35-14 lead. Then with 5:20 remaining in the ball game, Hasson connected with Matthew Gill on a 59-yard touchdown pass.
Drew Noland was a tackling machine for Centreville’s defense as he led the Tigers with 15 tackles. Not to be outdone, Clark had 10 tackles and two interceptions. Both Shaw and Parker Doughty had eight tackles and Brandon Arnett had one fumble recovery.
Centreville Academy, the MAIS District 6-AA champion and the top-ranked team in Class AA, finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and will host at least a first-round playoff game, which will take place Friday at 7 p.m.
