Ferriday discusses possibility of adding saggy pants ordinance

Ferriday — Ferriday residents with sagging pants may soon be in violation of a proposed ordinance in the town.

Alderwoman Gloria Lloyd introduced an ordinance Tuesday evening at the town’s board of aldermen meeting that prohibits a person in public view from wearing pants, short or skirts below the waistline that exposes undergarments or skin.

“If we can write tickets for cracked windshields, we can write tickets for sagging pants,” Lloyd said. “I don’t like to see anybody’s underwear when I’m in the grocery store shopping.”

The ordinance states the town finds “the exposure of a person’s buttocks, genital area or undergarments offensive and indecent.”

The ordinance does not detail what the punishment would be for those residents who violate the proposed ordinance.

The board approved the introduction of the ordinance Tuesday. A public hearing on the ordinance will take place at the town’s next meeting on Jan. 14.

In other news from the meeting:

4The board approved a motion to send out request for proposals for a new garbage collection contract for the town.

At a specially called meeting last month, the board voted to allow town attorney Myesha Davis to write a letter to Delta Disposal, the town’s current garbage collection company, asking to be removed from a three-year contract extension with the company.

Delta Disposal was awarded a one-year contract in February after its previous provider, Waste Management, suspended garbage pickup after the city failed to pay a $200,000 garbage bill. That contract, however, expires Dec. 31.

Several alderman expressed concerns about the town’s garbage collection come Jan. 1, but Davis assured the board garbage would still be picked up in the town.

“They can still pickup after that, it just won’t be under the same contract,” Davis said. “As long as we keep paying them, they’ll pick up.

“I’ve talked to the company, and they’re willing to negotiate a new contract, but we can send out requests for proposals and try to get a better rate.”

The requests for proposals will be advertised next week with the goal of having potential bids turned in by Dec. 30 for review.

The board voted to send out two requests for proposals: one for trash pickup once a week, with or without containers, and one for trash pickup twice a week, with or without containers.

4The town’s annual Christmas parade will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with lineup starting at Ferriday High School.

The parade was originally scheduled for last weekend, but was postponed because of weather conditions.

There is no entrance fee to participate in the parade.
