Prep roundups: NHS boys stay undefeated, girls lose

HATTIESBURG — Three players for Natchez High School scored in double figures as the Bulldogs maintained their unbeaten record with a 59-43 victory against Prentiss High School in the Coca-Cola Classic Thursday.

Gary Woods led the way with 14 points for the Bulldogs, and Daryl Jones pitched in with 12 points. Keylan Wimley added 11 to NHS’s effort.

NHS led 24-20 at the half, and a 22-point effort by the Bulldogs in the third quarter allowed them to pull away, 46-32, at the end of three.

Prentiss’ James Hawthorne was the team’s only double-digit scorer. He finished with 14 points.

NHS (11-0) will play again at 7:30 p.m. today in round two of the classic.

South Jones 44, Natchez High 38

HATTIESBURG — A strong performance by Rashonae Rice wasn’t enough as the Natchez High School girls were handed their first loss of the season against South Jones, 44-38, in the Coca-Cola Classic.

Rice led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 14 points, but no one else for NHS scored in double figures. South Jones, meanwhile, had three players with double-digit scoring, as Kalen Phillips tallied 13, Maia McCullum and Jakeyla Miller each added 11.

South Jones led 24-12 at the half and 37-22 at the end of the third.

NHS (10-1) will play again in the tournament at noon today.

Franklin Parish girls 76, Ferriday 66

SICILY ISLAND — Despite taking a 16-8 lead after the first quarter, the Ferriday High School girls were outscored 68-50 the rest of the way as the Lady Trojans fell to Franklin Parish, 76-66, in the Sicily Island Tournament.

Ferriday’s Jada Griggs scored 28 points for Ferriday, which led 34-33 at the half. Shakeria Kelly contributed with 18 points, and D’Asia Mitchell had 10 points for Ferriday.

The Lady Trojans (2-8) will play Vidalia High School at 3:40 p.m. today in the tournament.

Vidalia boys 62,

Tensas High 58

SICILY ISLAND — Isiah Thompson led Vidalia High School with 21 points as the Vikings topped Tensas High School, 62-58, in the Sicily Island Tournament.

Deion Brown added 15 points for Vidalia, which led 31-29 at intermission. Julius Wilson factored in with 11 points for the Vikings.

The Vikings will next play Ferriday at 6:20 p.m. today in the tournament.

Sicily Island 33

SICILY ISLAND — Fran Duson led the way for Vidalia with 12 points as the Lady Vikings beat Sicily Island, 37-33, in a low-scoring game.

Jaylin Smith had 10 points for the Lady Vikings, while Janisha Smith for Sicily Island finished the game with 15 points

Vidalia led 17-14 at the half.

The Lady Vikings will next take on Ferriday at 3:40 p.m. today in the tournament.
