Girls Prep Roundup: Natchez girls bounce back from loss

HATTIESBURG — Kiana Jones led Natchez High with a game-high 14 points as the Lady Bulldogs got back on the winning track with a 58-43 win over the Prentiss High Lady Bulldogs Friday afternoon at the Hattiesburg High School Coca-Cola Holiday Classic.

Both teams played a hard-fought first half. Natchez High took a 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Prentiss responded with a 12-11 advantage in the second quarter to make it a 27-26 game at halftime.

The third quarter was the turning point of the ball game as Natchez High’s defense put the clamps down on Prentiss. Natchez High’s Lady Bulldogs outscored Prentiss Lady Bulldogs 15-5 in that quarter for a 42-31 lead. NHS scored 16 points in the fourth quarter while Prentiss managed just 12 points.

Kirdis Clark scored 11 points and Zyaire Ewing had 10 points for Natchez High. Prentiss was led by Joy Powell with 13 points while Watisha Newsome scored 11 points and Myyah West chipped in with 10 points.

Brookhaven 48, Trinity 33

BROOKHAVEN — The Trinity Episcopal Day School Lady Saints couldn’t find any consistent offense as they were ousted by Brookhaven Academy 48-33 in the 2013 Brookhaven Academy Holiday Invitational Friday.

Rosa Williams had a team high nine points as no Lady Saint was able to score in double figures. Marty Lewis and Tali Beard both scored eight points as well.

The Lady Saints weren’t able to stop Hillary Wilson, who had 17 points for Brookhaven.

Trinity scored just five points in the first quarter while allowing 17 points. The defense didn’t get much better in the second quarter, allowing another 17 points for Brookhaven while scoring just seven points to go behind 34-12 at halftime.

Though they found a way to limit Brookhaven to less than 10 points in each of the final two quarters, the Lady Saints couldn’t find a way to put points on the board as they fell 48-33.

Trinity plays at 3:15 p.m. today against Parklane Academy.
