Girls Prep Roundup: Natchez girls lose 2 of 3 games in tourney

HATTIESBURG — Early foul trouble hindered Natchez High School in their game against Wayne County High School in the Hattiesburg High School Coca-Cola Holiday Classic as they lost to the Lady War Eagles 53-47 .

Zyaire Ewing had a game high of 21 points, but fouled out in the second half, and no other Lady Bulldog was able to step up and score more than seven points.

Three Wayne County players scored in double figures as the Lady Bulldogs’ foul trouble didn’t allow them to play as aggressive as usual in the second half.

Starting point guard Ernesha Chapman also fouled out in the second half after Natchez took a 29-22 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs watched that lead slowly disappear as they were outscored 18-13 in the third quarter and 18-8 in the final quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs ended the tournament 1-3, and 11-2 overall as they take a break before heading back to the court Jan. 5 at McComb High School.

Tensas 54, Vidalia 28

SICILIY ISLAND — The Vidalia High School Lady Vikings just couldn’t generate enough offense against Tensas High School in the Sicily Island High School 2013 Basketball Tournament.

Bri Tolliver scored a team-high seven points for the Lady Vikings, and Fran Duson only put up five points in the loss. Cheyenne South ha 15 points for Tensas, and Chelsea Nash added 12 points as the Lady Panthers dominated from the start.

Vidalia was down 13-5 after the first quarter and though they seemed to pick it up little by little, they couldn’t get enough stops against Tensas.

The Lady Vikings scored eight points in the third quarter to Tensas’s 12 to go into the locker room 25-13. Vidalia kept up with Tensas in the third quarter, scoring 12 points to its’ 14, but couldn’t get over the hump with a five-point fourth quarter performance.

Parklane 37, Trinity 26

BROOKHAVEN — The Trinity Episcopal Day School Saints had a hard time handling Parklane Academy’s full court press as they were ousted 37-26 at the 2013 Brookhaven Academy Holiday Invitational.

Marty Lewis was the only lady Saint in double figures as she scored 10 points. Julianne Adams put up 14 points for Parklane.

The Lady Saints only scored two points in the first quarter, but as they adjusted to Parklane’s press, they were able to put up eight points in the second quarter to outscore Parklane 8-6. Trinity was down just 11-10 at half time, but couldn’t put enough defensive pressure on Parklane as they allowed 13 points in the third and fourth quarter.

Trinity will not play again until Jan. 7 against Tensas Academy.

Epps 55, Ferriday 49

SICILY ISLAND — Ferriday High School made too many careless mistakes in the fourth quarter as they couldn’t make a clean comeback against Epps High School in the Sicily Island High School 2013 basketball tournament.

JadaGriggs and Shakeria Kelly led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 13 points each. D’Asia Michtell added on 10 points. Alexis Holp had 14 points for Epps and Keisha Washington tallied 11 points to defeat Ferriday.

The Lady Trojans were down 15-10 after the first quarter, and watched the led extend to as much as 33-22 by halftime. The second half was better for Ferriday as it outscored Epps 27-22, but mental mistakes made the difference in the last five minutes of regulation.

The Lady Trojans will play again Jan. 3 against New Living Word.
