Prep boys roundup: Jefferson County upsets Hinds AHS

FAYETTE — Led by Ry’Yale Brown, Christian Day and Jadarius Harried, the Jefferson County Tigers got their biggest win of the season so far as they upset the Hinds Agricultural High School Bulldogs 54-53 Friday night at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

Brown led all scorers with 22 points while Day finished with 11 points and Harried added 10 points. Neither team could grab the momentum away from the other for most of this ball game.

The game was tied 6-6 after one quarter of play and 20-20 at halftime. Finally, the Tigers broke the tie by outscoring the Bulldogs 15-14 in the third quarter for a 35-34 lead. The Bulldogs had their chances to win the game in the fourth quarter, but it was not meant to be as both teams ended up scoring 19 points.

Deandre Bolton led Hinds AHS with 12 points and Trevarius Draper added 10 points.

Jefferson County closes out its holiday tournament by taking on East Feliciana (La.) today at 7:30 p.m. Hinds AHS takes on Prentiss today at 4:30 p.m.

Monterey 61, Cathedral 41

MONTEREY — Dillon Smith and Kade Passman scored 18 points each to lead the Monterey Wolves to a convincing 61-41 win over the Cathedral Green Wave Friday night.

Trey Book chipped in with 11 points for Monterey, which dominated Cathedral for much of the first half. The Wolves held the Green Wave to just six points in the first quarter while scoring 21 points themselves. The second quarter was much closer, but Monterey outscored Cathedral 12-8 for a 33-14 halftime lead.

The Green Wave played better on the offensive end in the second half, but couldn’t make enough stops to get back in the game. James Coley had a double-double with a game-high 22 points to go with 14 rebounds.

Cathedral (4-7) returns to MHSAA Division 7-1A action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Bogue Chitto. Monterey (12-5) hosts Atlanta (La.) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sicily Island 78, Vidalia 53

SICILY ISLAND — Sicily Island may be five classifications lower than Vidalia, but the LHSAA Class C Tigers sure weren’t intimidated or lacking in confidence as they defeated the Class 3A Vikings 78-53 Friday night.

Derion Dunbar and LaDarius Frazier scored 18 points each, Larry Plummer had 17 points and Javontae Smith added 10 points for Sicily Island, which led Vidalia 25-20 after one quarter of play and then held the Vikings to a combined 18 points over the next two quarters for a commanding, and perhaps stunning, 51-38 lead.

The Tigers capped off the big win with a 27-15 advantage over Vidalia in the fourth quarter. Isiah Thompson led the Vikings with a game-high 28 points, but their next leading scorer was Deion Brown with eight points.

Vidalia hosts Franklin Parish at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Prentiss 56, Amite County 46

FAYETTE — Chauncey Baggett led four Prentiss players in double figures with a game-high 15 points as the Bulldogs defeated the Amite County Trojans 56-46 Friday afternoon at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

James Hawthorne scored 14 points, JaVonne Walker added 11 points and Donta Ford chipped in with 10 points for Prentiss, which led Amite County 26-23 at halftime before outscoring the Trojans 13-9 in the third quarter and 17-14 in the fourth quarter.

Prentiss takes on Hinds Agricultural High School today at 4:30 p.m. at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

New Living Word 78, Ferriday 47

RUSTON, La. — New Living World used an 18-8 advantage over Ferriday to turn a close game into a blowout as the Lions defeated the Trojans 78-47 Friday night.

The Lions led the Trojans 17-12 after one quarter of play, but after their big second quarter they went into halftime with a 35-20 lead. Ferriday was never able to get back in the game in the second half.

Ferriday next plays at Sicily Island at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
