Texas Southern defeats Alcorn State

HOUSTON (AP) — Aaric Murray scored 26 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to lead Texas Southern to an 83-66 victory over Alcorn State Saturday night.

Jose Rodriguez added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (5-8, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Lawrence Johnson-Danner scored 14 points with five rebounds and DeAngelo Scott chipped in with 13 points. The Tigers hit 54 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Alcorn State led by four early but lost a step late in the first period to trail Texas Southern 44-31 at the break.

Texas Southern was in control throughout the second period, leading by as many as 24 points at 14:41 in the second.

LeAntwan Luckett scored 24 points with five assists for the Braves (3-10, 0-1). Octavius Brown added 14 points and led the team with 12 rebounds.

The loss was the ninth straight for Alcorn State.
