Prep soccer roundups: Cathedral girls get 3-0 win

BROOKHAVEN — The Cathedral Lady Green Wave clinched a berth in the MHSAA Class 1A/2A/3A South State Playoffs with a 3-0 win over the Loyd Star Lady Hornets Tuesday night.

Abby Brown, Maddy Christian and Kayla Cauthen each scored a goal for Cathedral, which improved to 7-4 overall and finished with a 6-2 record in Region 6-1A/2A/3A.

“We played well. We got the young ones some experience. We had some more experienced players move around,” Lady Green Wave head coach Donovan Silva said. “After the tough loss to Franklin County, we needed to get back to our winning ways, and we did.”

Cathedral will next play at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday at Region 5-1A/2A/3A champion St. Andrews in a first-round playoff game.

Franklin County girls 3, Crystal Springs 0

CRYSTAL SPRINGS — Si’Edriq Middleton, Krislyn Kent and Jourdan Cummings each scored one goal for the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs in their 3-0 win over the Crystal Springs Lady Tigers Tuesday night to win the MHSAA Region 6-1A/2A/3A championship.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 18-1 overall and finished with a perfect 8-0 record in region play. They will host Region 5 runner-up Madison St. Joseph next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the Class 1A/2A/3A South State Playoffs.

But before that game takes place, the Lady Bulldogs host McLaurin for Senior Night at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Franklin County boys 8, Crystal Springs 3

CRYSTAL SPRINGS — Hoby Mullins did better than just a hat trick on this night. He finished with five goals Tuesday night to give him 41 on the season as the Franklin County Bulldogs defeated the Crystal Springs Tigers 8-3 to run the table in Region 6-1A/2A/3A.

Greg Queen, Zayne Mullins and Kane Gilliam each had one goal and Nathaniel Verdin had five saves for Franklin County, which improved to 18-1 overall and finished 8-0 in region play.

Franklin County next hosts McLaurin for Senior Night at 7 p.m. Friday before hosting Region 5 runner-up St. Aloysius next Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Class 1A/2A/3A South State Playoffs.

Loyd Star boys 2, Cathedral 1

BROOKHAVEN — A tough season for the Cathedral Green Wave ended with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Loyd Star Hornets Tuesday night in an MHSAA Region 6-1A/2A/3A game.

Plheini Doan scored what turned out to be Cathedral’s only goal of the game at the 15th minute of the first half with an assist from John Ashton Hicks. The Green Wave held that 1-0 lead not only into halftime, but a good ways into the second half before Loyd Star tied it at 1-1. The Hornets scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with about seven minutes left.

Green Wave head coach Dennis Hogue said his team kept the ball on Loyd Star’s side of the field for much of the final five minutes of the game, but were unable to take advantage.

Nic Webb had 13 saves for Cathedral, which finished 2-9 overall and 1-7 in region play.
