Icy weather puts halt to regional games

NATCHEZ — Concerns about hazardous driving conditions and the potential for power outages due to yet another winter storm to hit parts of Mississippi and Louisiana have forced some schedule changes for the MAIS Class A South Regional Tournament at Tallulah Academy in Tallulah, La.

The eight-team postseason tournament was scheduled to start on Tuesday, but the threat of freezing rain, especially on bridges and overpasses, in portions northeast Louisiana and west-central Mississippi led the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools with no choice but to push back the start of the tournament.

The games that were to take place on Tuesday will now take place today with the times remaining the same.

In the girls’ bracket, District 8 No. 4 seed Cenla Christian Academy will take on District 7 champion Tensas Academy at 4 p.m. and District 7 No. 4 seed Franklin Academy goes up against District 8 champion Claiborne Academy at 6:30 p.m.

In the boys’ bracket, District 7 No. 4 seed Wilkinson County Christian Academy takes on District 8 champion Cenla Christian Academy at 5:15 p.m. and District 7 No. 3 seed Tallulah Academy faces District 8 No. 2 seed Claiborne Academy at 7:45 p.m.

The games that were to take place on Wednesday will now be played on Thursday at the same scheduled times.

In the girls’ bracket, District 7 No. 3 seed Trinity Episcopal takes on a former longtime postseason rival in District 8 No. 2 seed Riverdale Academy at 5:15 p.m. and District 8 No. 3 seed Union Christian Academy faces District 7 No. 2 seed Tallulah Academy at 7:45 p.m.

Over in the boys’ bracket, District 8 No. 3 seed Riverdale Academy takes on District 7 No. 2 seed Franklin Academy at 4 p.m. and District 8 No. 4 seed Union Christian Academy has the unenviable task of going up against District 7 champion and undefeated Trinity Episcopal at 6:30 p.m.

Because of these changes, there will be no off day for the tournament. Thursday would have been that been that off day before the start of the semifinals on Friday.

The MAIS Class A South Regional Tournament was not the only games having to be rescheduled due to the treacherous weather.

Ferriday High School’s LHSAA District 2-2A varsity games at Jonesboro-Hodge High School have been postponed from Tuesday to today beginning at 6 p.m.
