MEADVILLE — In one of the most unusual playoff games in recent memory, the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs defeated the West Marion Lady Trojans 61-54 Monday night in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs.

Unusual because West Marion, the Division 8 No. 3 seed, had four players score in double figures while Franklin County had just one player do so. However, that one player for the Lady Bulldogs was Tadayla Hunt, who led all scorers with 29 points.

Franklin County took a 19-16 lead over West Marion after one quarter of play and appeared well on its way to a blowout win after outscoring the Lady Trojans 17-9 for a 36-25 halftime lead. But the Lady Trojans made sure that would not happen even though they did not put a serious dent in the deficit in the second half.

West Marion was led by Mylesha Hammond with 17 points. Sharell Singleton had 14 points, Ariel Conerly added 11 points and Aliyah Barnes chipped in with 10 points. Jamecia Starks scored eight points while Jada Hunt and Danielle Washington scored six points each for the Lady Bulldogs.

Franklin County (15-12), the Division 7 No. 2 seed, will next play at the MHSAA Class 3A South State Tournament at Crystal Springs High School against Division 6 No. 4 seed Morton at 4 p.m. Thursday. Morton upset Division 5 No. 1 seed Choctaw Central.

Stringer 71, Cathedral 44

STRINGER — Teshia Jones scored a game-high 26 points and Katelyn McCurty finished with 20 points to lead the Division 8 No. 1 seed Stringer Attendance Center Lady Red Devils to a 71-44 win over the Division 7 No. 4 seed Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave Monday night in the first round of the MHSAA Class 1A South State Playoffs.

Cathedral came ready to play and was only down six points, 18-12, after one quarter of action. Unfortunately, the Lady Green Wave did not have enough offense to stay with Stringer, nor could they slow down its barrage of outside shots.

“We broke their press, but they made a lot of 3s,” Lady Green Wave head coach Randy Smith said.

That was evident in the second and third quarters, when the Lady Red Devils pulled away. They outscored the Lady Green Wave 21-10 in the second quarter and 19-9 in the third quarter to make it a 58-31 ball game.

Elizabeth Smith led Cathedral with 17 points and Grayson Bryant added eight points. The Lady Green Wave finished with an overall record of 13-13.

Arcadia 72, Block 43

ARCADIA, La. — The No. 5 seed Arcadia Lady Hornets rolled to a 72-43 win over the No. 12 seed Block Lady Bears 72-43 Monday night in the regional round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs. No other information on the game was available.

Block, which won the District 3-1A championship, finished its season with a 17-9 overall record.
