Trinity players attend Rivals camp

NATCHEZ — Quinton Logan and Dee Fleming found themselves surrounded by the best high school football players in the region at a Rivals camp Saturday.

The Trinity Episcopal Day School football players tried to keep their wide eyes narrow and open jaws shut, as they performed alongside some of the most notable players in the country.

Once Fleming and Logan arrived at the camp, it wasn’t the stars on Rivals.com that intrigued the Saints. Instead, Fleming and Logan were star-struck by some of the players that attended, including ninth grader Dylan Moses, who committed to the LSU Tigers as an eighth grader.

“When he walked up, I was like ‘dude, there’s Dylan Moses,’” Fleming said.

Fleming and Logan received an invite to the workout in Hattiesburg, where scouts and coaches analyzed the players. Yahoo’s Rivals.com will attach grades to each player’s biography at the end of the week.

Logan said when it came time to perform at the camp, both players had to get over their timid feelings.

“You have to show other people that you can perform at the same level,” Logan said.

Logan participated in the linebacker drills while Fleming worked with the running backs.

To achieve a high star rating, participants had to either win their respected position competitions or excel in them.

“We did a lot of one-on-one and a lot of individual drills,” Fleming said. “While we were doing the drills, they were evaluating us.”

Trinity head coach Zach Rogel attended the event and was very impressed with the camp.

“I’ve been to the Manning camps and other camps, but this was a different animal there,” Rogel said. “They only have 15 camps annually across the country, so I was awfully proud of them.”

Rogel was even more proud to see Fleming doing some running back drills that were already familiar to him. Fleming has been working on his agility with Rogel in preparation for next season, while Logan continues to impress on the diamond, coming off a 16-strikeout performance in a 7-3 win against WCCA Tuesday night.

“I’ve been doing a lot of speed training so far,” Fleming said. “I’m trying to get faster and get my 40-time down. I’ve been working on footwork this offseason, because obviously you have to have great footwork to be a running back.”

Fleming made it a personal goal after the event to be the top running back at next year’s Rivals camp.

“It’s great that they got to experience it as underclassmen, one a sophomore and one a junior,” Rogel said. “They’ll know what to expect when they go as seniors.”
