Prep Softbal Roundup: Lady Vikings avenge loss

MOREAUVILLE, La. — Taylor Rodgers offset an up-and-down performance on the mound by going 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in as the Vidalia Lady Vikings defeated the Avoyelles Lady Mustangs 12-5 Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.

Rodgers picked up the win despite allowing five runs, four of them earned, on 10 hits and two walks to go with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. She pitched three shutout innings to start the game before Avoyelles tagged her for four runs in the next two innings, three of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning.

However, Vidalia’s offense came ready to play. The Lady Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of two innings and added three runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 6-0 lead. They scored four more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 10-1 lead before Avoyelles tried to get back in the game.

Savannah McCarver went 4-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs, Cassie Gonzales was 4-for-5 with two doubles, and Katelynn Bertelsen was 4-for-5 with a double for Vidalia (11-9, 5-5), which hosts Monterey at 4 p.m. today.

Monterey 14, Avoyelles Public Charter 2

MANSURA, La. — Paige Bryan allowed one earned run on six hits and Tiffany Weeks hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning as the Monterey Lady Wolves defeated the Avoyelles Public Charter Lady Vikings 14-2 in five innings Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 6-B game.

Bryan also struck out three and walked one and she helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with a double. Weeks’ home run was part of a four-run first inning as the Lady Wolves ended up with 18 hits in the game. Jody Duncan and Ashley Wilson each went 4-for-4 while Karlee Woodruff went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Weeks also had a double and went 2-for-4.

Monterey scored five runs in the top of the second inning, two in the top of the third and three in the top of the fifth. Avoyelles Charter scored one run each in the bottom of the second and third innings. Cassie Kuplesky went 2-for-2 with a double.

Monterey (11-7, 4-1) plays at 4 p.m. today at Vidalia.

Franklin County 7, Wesson 3

MEADVILLE — Harley McKay allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out seven in a complete-game performance as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs defeated the Wesson Lady Cobras 7-3 Thursday night in a critical MHSAA Region 7-3A game for both teams.

Franklin County broke a 1-1 tie after one inning of play with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back. McKay helped her own cause by going 2-for-4 with one run batted in and Krislyn Kent also went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Alyssa Case brought in two runs for the Lady Bulldogs.

Franklin County (10-7, 4-1) plays at Tylertown today at 6 p.m. with the Region 7-3A championship on the line. Both teams have one loss in region play.
