NATCHEZ — A McLaurin Elementary School student is facing disciplinary action after school officials confiscated a BB gun the student brought on campus.

Superintendent Frederick Hill said the student brought the BB gun to school Wednesday, but school officials were quickly able to confiscate the gun without any incident.

“We don’t take weapons lightly, weapon or even look-a-like,” Hill said. “I haven’t heard any reports of the kid threatening other students or brandishing the gun at all.”

Hill said district policy requires local law enforcement be called during such events to ensure the weapon is fake and to respond to the incident.

Natchez Police Department Detective Jerry Ford said no report had been filed with the department regarding the incident, and he was unaware of any officers responding to the school.

Hill said he was unaware if school officials filed a police report.

Hill said the district’s procedure can also require school personnel inform parents during similar situations, but none were notified this week.

“If we felt like students were in danger or a child had the intent of causing harm, we would have,” Hill said.

McLaurin principal Jerry Knight and NASD safety and security supervisor Ray Brown referred all questions regarding the incident to Hill.

NASD Board of Trustees president Tim Blalock said he had not been informed of the incident as of Friday, but hoped the district’s policy had been followed.

Blalock said he believed a student is automatically subject to be expelled if they bring any type of weapon — real or fake — to a school.

Hill said a recommendation would be made for the student to be expelled.
