Prep Roundup: Franklin County wins in 7th inning

BUDE — Franklin County scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning without getting a single base hit as the Bulldogs defeated the Choctaw County Chargers 6-5 Thursday afternoon to take a 1-0 lead in an MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs Play-In Round game.

Choctaw County, the Region 5-3A No. 3 seed, scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. Then Logan Black, who came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning, had his share of difficulties finding the strike zone. Hoby Mullins was hit by a pitch and then Black walked the next two batters to load the bases. Graham Cowart ended the game with a walk-off walk that scored Mullins.

The Chargers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning before the Bulldogs went on a pair of two-run rallies. The first one was in the bottom of the fourth inning that tied the game at 3-3 and that included an RBI triple by Bernard Selmon. The second one gave Franklin County a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Selmon had a triple in that half-inning and later scored.

Derick Brumfield ended up being the winning pitcher in just one-third of an inning of relief. He allowed one hit, struck out one, and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Selmon finished 2-for-3.

Franklin County (15-7), the Region 7-3A No. 2 seed, hits the road for Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Choctaw County 6 p.m. today.

JONESVILLE — The Block Bears solidified their spot in the postseason with a doubleheader sweep of the Montgomery Tigers in LHSAA District 3-1A action Thursday afternoon, taking Game 1 , 6-1 in four innings and winning Game 2, 7-1.

In the first game, Taylor Perron-Krause pitched a one-hitter, struck out nine and walked one. The only hit he gave up was an RBI triple by Bane Bailey in the bottom of the fourth inning. Austin Danzy went 2-for-2 with a double, a lead-off home run in the top of the first inning (Block was the visiting team) and two runs batted in, Perron-Krause helped his cause by going 2-for-3, and Dorian Bowman went 2-for-4 with two doubles

In the second game, the Bears were the home team and quickly erased a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. They added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kaylin Curry allowed no earned runs on two hits, two walks and one hit batter and he struck out seven batters. Brady Bean had a double and Danzy went 2-for-3.

Block (11-12, 6-4) will now wait to see which team it will play in the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs, which begin next week.

Monterey 15,

Harrisonburg 0

MONTEREY — The Monterey Wolves defeated the Harrisonburg Bulldogs 15-0 in four innings Thursday afternoon to finish undefeated in LHSAA District 6-B. No other information on the game was available.

Monterey (18-3, 6-0), the No. 1 team in Class B, will not play again until the LHSAA Class B Playoffs, which get under way next week.
