Vidalia — Day one of the Louisiana district 5 10-year-old all-star tournament didn’t exactly go as planned for head coach Justin Gregg and the Concordia All-Stars.

Concordia suffered a 13-1 loss to East Ouachita South Saturday evening, and the root cause was its errors.

“It’s hard to defend against base hits, it was small errors that got base runners on base and it got them set up to score,” Gregg said.

The game was scoreless in the first inning, but East Ouachita got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second and third innings on passed balls with a runner on third base.

Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning, Concordia had opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but couldn’t capitalize.

The momentum stayed with East Ouachita in the top of the fourth inning, and they stretched their lead to nine runs sparked by Rashad Davis as he stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded.

He doubled to bring home Noah Miller and Ryley Calhoun to extend the lead 4-0 with no outs.

Concordia was plagued with loaded bases throughout the inning and the inability to end a treacherous inning before the game seemed to be lost.

But Concordia showed a brief sign of life in the bottom of the fourth inning as it scored its only run of the game. Bryan Johnson doubled, and the hit seemed to make the bats come alive for Concordia, as Xander Harveston singled to bring home Payton Roberts, 9-1.

The momentum for Concordia was short-lived, as East Ouachita sealed the deal in the top of the fifth inning with four more runs and didn’t allow Concordia to score again to end the game in five innings on a 10-run mercy rule.

Gregg said his team must make their bats come alive today if they want to stay in the double-elimination tournament.

“We just have to come out and hit. This is a team built on power hitters, and we only had two hits (Saturday),” Gregg said.

Concordia will play the Catahoula All-Stars at 3 p.m. today in the loser’s bracket.
